I've been debating on buying this game as I own the previous titles. Do people play this game in multiplayer?

Feels alive for this type of game.
I've posted open PBEM game and it was accepted within 30 mins.

I have had no issue finding PBEM games using the official Discord channel.
I haven't tried to host a public game yet, but I suspect somebody would accept rather quickly if I left one up for anybody to join. PBEM system works great.
