Bug Fixes/Workarounds (Players Helping Players)

Post by rkr1958 »

Introduction.

(1) Since we now are on our own, I've started this thread as a resource for all us "die hard" MWIF Players.
(2) Specifically, as a resource for helping us navigate through MWIF shortcomings & (more importantly) bugs.
(3) Shortcomings, in my opinion, include a myriad of things; for example: (1) uncoded optional rules (e.g., Soviet GBA), (2) DUMB-LAG), (3) can't think of any more at the moment but I'm sure others can in spades.
(4) Now bugs, again in my opinion, come in three flavors: (1) irritating, (2) critical but not game stopping & (3) game stopping (i.e., MWIF crashes, freezes up or can't advance).
(5) Irritating bugs are those minor bugs that can be lived with (e.g., 2 Germany City based volunteers (CBV) that don't show up unless you edit them in, inability to return lend lease air units - nothing more frustrating than to draw an obsolete 1939 lend lease air frame in 1944!).
(6) By the way, if folks are interested, in my current AAR, A Competitive GW (Solo) Scenario by the Numbers, I've edited in the 2 missing Germany CBVs, Soviet GBA promotions (3 so far) and return of obsolete lend lease airframes.
(7) Now back to bugs and their workarounds ...
(8) Critical bugs are bugs that don't crash or freeze the game but have a significant impact of game play.
(9) In fact, one such bug is the reason I started this thread and which I will describe and how I got around it in my next post.
(10) The last category of bugs are those in which a player cannot physically proceed and unless they can figure a way around their game is over!
(11) These are the most insidious bugs because we, as players, often invest months or even years in a game (my current AAR has been on-going since Oct 2024 & "Rematch 4 player game (Orm, Peskpesk, jjdenver and Mayhemizer)" AAR has been on-going since April 2019, which is currently 2 1/2 years longer than the 5-year war they're simulating!)

Secondary Supply Bug.

(1) I encountered this bug in MWIF version 8.1.0.1 (debug), which is the latest release to the beta testers.
(2) This will be my MWIF primary version unless Steve makes a "final" release for us beta testers; but I'm not holding my breath.
(3) The WDF armor corps is shown to be out of supply; but should be able to trace secondary supply to MacArthur and for him to a primary supply source.
(4) I also tried versions 8.2.0 (debug) (latest & last MWIF release), 7.0.0.1 (debug), 5.0.0.1 (debug) & 4.4.1.0 (debug) to no avail; i.e., bug still present.
(5) However; when I tried 3.2.0 (debug) the bug was not present.
(6) What's baffling is that I usually seen secondary supply bugs in 3.2.0 (debug) which are fixed in a later version.
(7) In this case, this secondary supply bug I encountered seems to be a regression bug introduced after 3.2.0 (debug).
(8) My workaround was to use version 3.2.0 (debug).

Secondary Supply Bug (another) Example or NOT?

(1) Hey guys I need some help on this one ...
(2) I don't know if this is a regression bug introduced or fixed since version 3.2.0?
(3) In 8.1.0.1 the Hungarian MIL northwest of La Rochelle is out of supply; but in 3.2.0 it's in supply.
(4) In 3.2.0 the Hungarian MIL is able to trace to a secondary supply source, Italian HQ-I Balbo who also traces to a secondary supply Rotterdam.
(5) Which version is correct?

8.1.0.1 (debug).

The Italian HQ is not a valid secondary supply source for the Hungarian unit because they don't cooperate. Showing that unit as OoS is correct.

Thanks, that's what I thought. So hear me out, I've got a hypothesis and please tell me what you think,

Allowing the Hungarian corps to trace to an Italian HQ in 3.2.0 was a bug fixed in MWIF version 4+. However; this "fix" introduced" a regression bug that broke tracing a secondary supply to a cooperating HQ in at least some cases (see previous post). Not sure if in all cases; however, was the case in the previous post.

So the way to workaround that is to use whatever version is correct when it matters. I know it's not very elegant; but it's the only workaround I can think of; unless someone has a better one?

A couple of comments:

The unit north of Rochelle is an INF
I cannot see Balbo in the area, so unless hidden you may want to say Cavallero
Rotterdam is not a Secondary supply source, Amsteram is
Remember that tracing to a secondary supply source that is a Capital city, still doesnt garantees supply, if you do it by rail it is not important to reach another secondary, so you'd need to trace to primary Italym or Germany which cooperates.

;) :P

Jose, thanks! Bugs and all that's why I'm glad to have MWIF to handle all the supply calculations. I can't imagine having to manually to do those checks all the time over the board or vassal. I wonder how many supply errors are made in those games?
