Does this weapon platform also serve as an AA platform, as it does on naval ships.
If so, will this be shown on the base screen as a gun platform, or AA platform, or both.

All DP guns do both CD & AA work.

Finally, can you give us a little insight into Allied production and any changes you might have made at this point. Are the planes really starting to roll out of the factories yet, or are things still in the molasses stage?

Things are flowing ... on the Allied side, there is nothing you can change.

Also a bit disturbed by the lack of AI LRCAP over Gili Gili landings...UV all over again. (Also wish they'd just called Gili Gili Milne Bay...sounds so much better )

Stealthed CV's, they *never* saw it coming. I was using search planed out of PM to locate the target, nothing flew from my CV's except to attack. Remember all the comments about how rough search is now. They had no need for CAP because there were no known fighters in the area.

In the total score screen what does Allied/Japanese "Strategic Losses" refer to? Destruction of factories? Production points? Killed civilians?

Damage to Industry via bombing.

Hmm, apologies for being dense, but I can't find it. I've looked, even done a search on "Mandalay", and all I can find is that the devs have "corrected" the problem. Anyway, I guess it's too late to suggest a fix, but my preference would be political points.

Change to Operational losses preventing the pilot pool running out...

You will note that the A6M's going up against my *greatly* *inproved* F4F-4's kicked their butts. Mandalay is a problem with extremely low skilled pilots going up against extremely skilled pilots. It has *nothing* to do with troop skills, road/rail speed or any other such factor. The Buffalos in Dacca are being attacked from Rangoon, that is extreme range and these are the same pilots that survived Singapore so they too are quite skilled. Pilot skills mean something in WitP. It is *not* just about the plane like it was in UV. Excellent Pilots in average planes can deal with Poor pilots in Excellent planes. This was a major complaint from UV.

The AI seems capable against a very experienced player so it should give newbies a hard time. Mr Frag's explanation of how the Mandalay situation came about is reasonable IMHO and any player would like to be able to achieve those results. Skill and luck go hand in hand for success.

Very true. But it is extremely ahistorical. The command structure in Burma at the time was fractured, and the Japanese conquered Burma fairly quickly. In this AAR, Japan has lost 800+ planes in Burma alone. And it is only four months into the war.

What we want is an AI that can "outplay" us..., not just one that has been artificially
reinforced to the point that even bad play can give it victory. The problem with that
solution is that when you play a "real" opponant the sides and abilities are totally
skewed. Japan, like other powers at the time, had been expanding it's forces in
preparation for the war. So not all of them were "battle-Hardened" or had "100's
of hours of combat flying" over China..., some were rather newly created and trained.

I have modded enough games to know that a person cannot create a scenario that is balanced for both AI and human opponents.

The AI must always be given greater help. Always.

The solution? Create two scenarios: one to be played against AI; the other against a human. Smply copy and paste the main campaign and rename it for PBEM. Then make a copy of the same campaign and give the AI more help.
Von Rom, your suggestions are well-taken, but many of them would only exacerbate problems when the human plays the Japanese player against the AI. The imbalance would only be worse. Also, Frag has chosen a particular place to make a stand (well-chosen through experience, I'm sure). But making special rules for Mandalay or Burma or the CBI doesn't make sense. Frag could just as easily have picked some other spot to lure the AI onto its samurai sword. You can't have special rules for every possible trap for the AI.

Consensus seems to be that the AI is doing fairly well. No game on the market will have AI that can't be fooled by a human. Don't let Frag's successful strategy for one city color our opinions. Furthermore, I think Frag would admit that his strategy in the CBI was a bit unrealistic. Had he not done some of the things he did, he's admitted Mandalay would have been lost. Nothing prevents a human player with knowledge of the AI's necessary shortcomings from exercising a little self-control, which will result in a more realistic game. Do what Frag did, and you bring the bring the curse of an imperfect AI upon yourself. If your honest with yourself, you would admit that you pull many of the nasty tricks you pull against the AI only because you know you can. In that case, an unsatisfying game is self-inflicted.

The solution is creating two scenarios - one against the AI; the other against human opponents. Besides, I think the vast majority of players will be playing the AI for a long time.

Mr. Frag's strategy is very clever. But I also think it's unrealistic and indicates a loop-hole in the game that should be fixed. In the opening months of the war the Japanese armed forces ruled in the Pacific. All historians agree that the Allies NEVER stood a chance.

I can't remember the exact points breakdown, but loosing 200,000 Allied troops/vehicles/guns is going to put a huge chunk of score on the board. As is, I am almost 7,800 VP in the hole on troop losses.

In the first year of the war in the Pacific the score should be highly skewed in Japan's favour. There are still almost 4 more years to go with the huge US industrial economy to churn out a ton of weapons.

Also, as of May 1st, 1942 in this AAR, the Japanese have lost almost twice the number of planes as the Allies, and they have lost 5x the number of ships! There is surely something wrong here. Historically, the Japanese swept the skies of Allied planes in the Pacific in the early months of the war, and suffered few ships lost. At this rate what's going to happen in 1943?

This situation is producing exaggerated and highly ahistorical results. Buffalos against Zeros. Historically, the Japanese shot those Buffalos down as though they were pesky flies. . .

As I have mentioned Mr. Frag, you have done very well and should be complimented in dealing well with the Japanese in Burma. [:)]

However, your strategy also indicates a loop-hole that should be fixed. As wargamers, we are looking for an historical game, and I think many of us have read enough about the Pacific War to have a fair idea of how events happened in this theatre.

Clearly, the ahistorical destruction of 800 Japanese planes in Burma, and driving the Japanese from Burma so early in the war, has skewed the game elsewhere, with the end result that the Japanese are losing a host of planes and ships that, by 1943, will cripple the AI.

May 1st totals. Note the Brits are once again demanding more ships back ... things are not going well in the other theater it would seem. [;)]

Another note:

Japanese Operational Losses:

577 planes out of 2099 planes lost have been due to "Operational Losses".

This is 27.4% of ALL aircraft the Japanese have lost in the first 5 months of the war.

This is five times the Allied loss rate.

Forget Midway. By anyone's account this is a disaster. Who is flying those planes?

I think the operational loss calculations should be looked at.

However, your strategy also indicates a loop-hole that should be fixed.

Don't know how many different ways I can say this, but it has been already fixed!!!

Von Rom, I think byron13 said it very well a couple of pages back:
I think Frag would admit that his strategy in the CBI was a bit unrealistic.
Don't go gamey on the AI, and you'll have a more historical game. Personally, I am not ready to say that something is broken and must be fixed until I have a chance to play it myself...

Most of what I said was in reply to others who had indicated the situation seemed OK to them.

Sorry, but I fail to understand your reasoning here [&:]

Mr. Frag's excellent play has indicated a loop-hole. As he has already mentioned, this loop-hole has been fixed.

I could be wrong, but I thought the purpose of playtesting and our comments was to help close those loop-holes?

Why should we have to create artifical rules when we can clearly see what needs to be fixed?

Come on guys, Frag is playing on historical difficulty, using ALOT of hindsight 20/20, every trick he knows. AtoA losses are high for the AI, but since he did not leave his air groups in the PI to wither and die on a vine, in SRA. He concentrated his airpower, saved the groups worth saving, upgraded, rested them. He is not shocked liked the REAL allied command structure, he is not concerned with historical bickering between commands which diluted the combat power etc.

When I get and play the game, after 2,000 restarts because I discovered something new or how something works, and I hand the AI its head on a platter, I will start shouting. It may be me, but I still have trouble with UV's AI, if I do not use "gamey" tactics.

Other than that, keep a going Frag. Sorry to highjack your thread.
