The last game I played was the original X-wing. So it is taking me a while to get through the training missions. Every time I have died in the training mission and selected to do it again, the screen goes black and a few seconds later, I'm back to my normal windows screen. The one time I did complete the first mission and started the second it was fine until I died there.
Now when I crash land in the second mission and try again it crashes again with the same black screen. Restarting again seems to be fine. But I would like to be able to continue without having to restart the program.
The crashes are strange with the fact that there is no warning or crash dialog, the screen goes black and then I'm back in windows again. Nor is there any record of a problem in the event viewer.
Also, I do get some static sound every so often when the missions load.
Have you heard of this problem? What should I do?
I have:
Starshatter 4.0.1
Gateway P4 1.8
512 memory
Gefore II MX 400
On board audio that uses Sound Blaster Live.
Logitec Freedom 2.4 wireless joystick
running in 800x600x16
window XP home (up to date on all patches)

I have the exact same problem. When I die during a mission, then try to start the next, I get straight back to the game start menu (the one with links to registering, etc.).
My error log (I post the part with my sys config, and the bit from the end, let me know if you need any more).
Kinda sucks, having to re-start the game every time you die.

[;)]Well, I don't mind stepping up the realism/difficulty once I know the better, but while learning the game and dieing three times during every mission it kind of kills motivation. [;)]

Try this: hit "Escape" then "2" quickly while you are dying. If you time it right, you may "abort" the mission and it might not crash. It's an exploit that I found by accident just an hour ago... I'm sure others have too.
As for killing the mines- It is prboably best if you take rockets. Plink the mines from outside their range. If you run out of rockets or otherwise get in range, use the lateral thrusters liberally to avoid fire. The most convienient way to use these is the HAT switch on the joystick. I've only ever done it that way so I'm not sure how else.

Well, I tried and re-installed the game (not easy with them CRC checksum errors), and it seems that the problem doesn't exist in 4.0.0, so it may be part of the 4.0.1 CTD problem.
