Allied tips...evacuate as much ABDA base forces as u can along with resources, although the early Jap capture of Kendari means Betties etc will be interdicting your evacuation lines.I also pulled the Ozzie Buffalo squadrons from Singapore cause these can be upgraded to Hurricane IIs as soon as replacements appear.
Aslo make sure you only use your US CVs when your are absolutely sure that the KB isnt waiting to spring a trap. This is where you should build up your Catalina recon line in the Central and SW Pacific so you have a few turns warning of any impending attack.
Move your Chinese land forces into the heartland of China as a good Jap player could take advantage of the weak Chinese forces near the coast.

Finally the inevitable air attack on Singapore. Ggraven has been threatening to shut me down there and this is his opening move.

Lousy fog of war.. But I do know that I hurt his Nell force. Too bad my bombers stayed grounded today

Proving that every upside has a downside Hong Kong falls to invading Japanese!

Ground combat at Hong Kong

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 62010 troops, 755 guns, 19 vehicles

Defending force 11879 troops, 63 guns, 4 vehicles

Japanese forces CAPTURE Hong Kong base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
85 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
12312 casualties reported
Guns lost 60

With the Loss of Yenen and now Hong Kong I am now operating in a void in China. I will re-enforce me bases as well as I can and hope for the best. In Ichang the Japanese suffer heavy losses in continued fighting.

Meanwhile more Japanese troops unload at Mersing and the Aussies there put up a good fight.I’m hoping the can hold for a while.. I’m even considering re-enforcing them if it gets to bad for them. Giving up Mersing is just letting the Japanese get one step closer to Singapore.

The only other report is that the SS Seawolf found the Kongo retiring back to port and bounched a torp of it’s hull.. Hopefully the ringing sound will at least give some of the crew a headache.

In Malaya the Japanese land more troops at Mersing but the Aussies keep fighting.. tough guys. Some troops I managed to escape from the north should be arriving soon to support them but I don’t know if they will get there in time. The Singapore Air force didn’t do much today,, missing all it’s intended targets while Japanese bombers over Singapore don’t do much either.. Even the AVG doesn’t show up in force.

In China fighting continues in Nanchang and Ichang. I managed to have a couple of Corp of Chinese troops running around in the backfield behind the Japanese main thrust.. hopefully it will cause Ggraven more trouble..

In China The IJA pushed the Chinese out of Wuhan While fighting continues in Ichang and Nanchang

The Japanese Capture Taytay

In other news the Lexington finally traded in her worn out Buffalos for some brand spanking factory fresh F4Fs.

The Japanese KB, which looks like it consists of three carriers ( Probably Sho, Zui and Hiryu), Still sit off Canton Island. It looks likes he wants to interdict transports from Oz and the US mainland.. And perhaps cover for an invasion?

Ok more comments.

My western thrusts are going according to plan. The US hasn't got much to stop me. I have my defense ring picked out. Now its just a matter of getting troops there before he does. I do have carriers southwest of PH around Palmyra. They have sunk alot of shipping there as Jon will tell you in the next few days. I know its not a crushing blow but it should slow him down some.

Malaya is going better now. I have several bombing groups in range of Singapore. The AVG is going to get its kills I know, however I can't be afraid to keep putting pressure on him. I have gotten all my carrier based claudes upgraded to zeros so now the land based squadrons will get these new marvels of Japanese engineering. Once that is done Jon can expect to see 80+ zeros of that airfield. I'm not worried about Mersing. I have more than enough troops there to push out the Aussies. If I get that airfield finally closed down I will start moving in more supply to keep the troops fed.

Production.
This I have a good handle on. It was intimidating at first but now I have things running along very smoothly. Thankyou Xargun.

Known mistakes for me so far.

Not keeping the pressure on Singapore. I was of the impression that those planes couldn't hit the broadside of a barn even it they were inside. Man was I wrong. Those bombers have sunk or damaged about 2 dozen ships.

Japan has alot of special ground units. I haven't been real good yet at using them. I still have several sitting at staging bases waiting to get in the fight.

Not paying attention to the garrison level at ANY base in China. One day I was looking at Shanghai and was seeing damage there. I took a peek and the city was totally ruined. I had less than 50 assult factors there. I have everything garrisoned again but its allowed Jon to get into my backfield and could take months to extract him.

Not enough troops for the PI. I have enough there to keep pace, however if I want to put serious pressure on the big bases I'm going to need more troops. Also if I had gotten more units I could've cut off the northern units and kept them from retreating to Manila.

Well next post will be my New Years resolutions.
Until then I'm off to kill more cyber troops.

Breaking news. A bad day for the USN today. I had managed to slip in a couple of FTs into Canton under the nose of the Japanese Carriers but while trying the same trick in the line Islands I get bounced. KB makes a sudden rush north and hits a convoy. This is costly but the risk was necessary. (at least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it)

I think I am seeing Ggraven’s promised solution to the Singapore problem.. A lot more bombers!

My main concern is in the central pacific where those Jap Carriers are now in the Line Islands just looking for trouble. Mercing is still holding but barely.

Dec 31st.

The Admiral, on the flag Bridge of the USS Enterprise, looked out into the horizon. He knew the Japanese where out there. Not the first line jobs that he knew were up north, causing havoc among the shipping south of Pearl but here, in the Coral Sea. Planes out of Brisbane reported three smaller carriers coming his way. The Enterprise had missed the bombardment force that had been plastering Port Moresby by a single day. Now, low on fuel and supplies, he had no choice but to head into the Japanese and hope for the best. Three against one was not the odds he wanted but it was the odds he was given. He turned to the flight office and ordered his planes aloft.
Enterprise planes passed the swarms of Kates heading towards their home. In the Distance they could make out the wakes of three Japanese Carriers below even as they saw their Wildcat escorts engage the Japanese Zeros.

Not a man aboard the Heavy Cruiser Northampton was dried eyed as they watched the mighty Enterprise slip under the waves. The Battle of the Coral Sea was over and the Americans had lost. Enterprise fought a valiant fight.. hitting all three enemy carriers but she couldn’t avoid the Japanese torpedoes. It wasn’t a complete victory for the Japanese. For they would need to retire. All three of their Carriers had been hit but none and been sunk.

Meanwhile somewhere in the United States the keel of a brand new carrier was laid. Someone suggested she be named Enterprise 2. In 470 days the Enterprise will rise again.

Ok, so the first Carrier vs. Carrier battle is over. I lost but my guys gave a good accounting before they went down.. Now my remaining ships need to escape before they are hit again. Oddly enough this was only the first catastrophe to happen to the USN today. KB headed towards Pearl, passing the line Islands and plasters a retreating convoy.

CinCPAC Report for December of 1941

With High Command still in shock over the results of the battle of the Coral Sea we present this State of the War report for December. This Report is broken down into the following combat areas.

Pearl Harbor and the Central Pacific
After the week long air strikes on Pearl Harbor we have successful retreated our battered warships to the mainland for repairs

We lost the Tennessee in the initial attack. The Nevada, California and Pennsylvania are all well on the way to full repair while the Arizona, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Maryland are all under 60 system damage..

Convoys are underway to replenish or forward bases.

The arrival of at least part of KB doesn’t bode well for this area. As of yet we have been unable to figure out Japanese intentions. Is this a prelude to invasion or just a hunting raid?

SWPAC

The Japanese have rapidly expanded in this area. Taking Rabaul, Lunga and other lesser basses. Port Moresby is vulnerable with only a token garrison but we have no current forces to spare for her defense. It is to Early to tell if the Battle of the Coral Sea will adversely effect Japanese operations in the area.

Philippines

Japanese troops run rampant over most of the Philippines but we still hold Manila, Battan and Clark’s Field. No reinforcements are available at this time.

Malaya

Singapore continues to draw swarms of Japanese planes. Our planes have hit over a dozen enemy transports and warships. The AVG has been exemplary. The AVG kills so far are
AVG/A Squadron 20 kills
AVG/B Squadron 32 Kills
AVG/C Squadron 40 Kills

Taking the Swordfish Squadron off the Hermes and posting in to Singapore has reaped some great benefits.

Mersing is still in danger of falling to the Japanese. If that happens they will have the means to post planes right next to Singapore. This must be avoided or postponed at all costs.

China

With the loss of Yenen at the beginning of the month things haven’t looked good in China. The month of December has been one of consolidating and reinforcing the Major Chinese cities. Several Corps have run deep into Japanese lines but only in a harassing way. We have not seen massive amounts of Japanese bombers deployed in China yet. WE can only assume they are elsewhere, perhaps being diverted to the increased attacks on Singapore.

British/India

The British have conducted a masterful withdraw from the area.. but that’s all they’ve done. A few convoys have trickled into Rangoon and Singapore but that is it. The only success in the area is the fact that the POW and Repulse did not get sunk.

Overview

With the arrival of the Yorktown we have three fleet carriers in the pacific. Approximately half the strength of KB. Hopefully with the results of the Battle of the Coral Sea we won’t be seeing the Japanese light carriers for a while. Our battleships will still be in dry-dock for at least a few more months. The next month should see CinCPAC upgrading it air assets and receiving more ships in theatre.

Losses to date

We have lost 65 ships so far.. Our biggest losses include the Tennessee and Enterprise.

Japan has lost 16.. Mostly transports but this number does include 4 subs, all caught operating in Hawaii waters.

Air to Air Losses (We are behind here but not as badly as we could be. Mainly on the Strength of the AVG)

Allied 244
Japanese 172

Total Air Losses

Allied 712
Japanese 386

Losses by type (Major Losses)

Allied

P-40B 145 (67 killed on the ground)
p-40E 32
Buffalo 55
Wildcats 45 (mainly from the loss of Enterprise)

Japanese

Nell 76
Zero 63
Kate 57 (A good number, hopefully the highly skilled pilots in this planes went down with them)
Val 37

The Air War is going as well as can be expected. With increasing numbers and better planes we hope to see these numbers improve. Can we increase the speed of research on the P-38 and F4U projects?

Until next month

Jon, Thanks for taking time to write out this AAR. You've made this one very accessable and exciting. It's helped me plan my strategy already. It's really helpful when both sides post their thoughts.
Don't worry to much about losing that carrier. You hit 3 of his carriers and probably put that little carrier task force out of the war for a while. Trading Carriers for time can be just as valuable as sinking enemy carriers.

Keep up the good work guys and good luck. I look forward to reading many more AARs

Comments from Tokyo High Command

December Report 1941.

As I have in previous posts commented on early month happenings I won't bore you all with a rehash [:D]

Having sunk the Enterprise was a special surprise. I had thought that a respone would come from Jon, trying to make me pay for bombarding Port Moresby, however I didn't expect to see it come from a US CV. I know there are a few Austrailian capital ships in the area and was hoping maybe they would show up. At this time it looks like the exchange will cost me the CVE Taiyo. The Ryujo and Zuiho are going to be down about 2-3 months repairing damage suffered from the SBD's. I have all but closed down the DEI to his shipping so when Singapore falls all that groovy stuff I need for my HI will be there just waiting for my TK's to ship if off.

As I'm the agressor its hard to try and explain what I'm doing without tipping my hand. I do have 3 operations in play that I should be able to tell you how they went in my January summaries.

China is doing better now that I have garrisoned those cities. Yes the Chinese commanding general committed seppiku as ordered by the Emperor. I have main thrusts going in four areas. I will wait to see which one bogs down before sending reinforcements from Japan. I anticipate that Jon is going to try and hold Rangoon as long as possible and I really want to cut the Burma road into China.

I will keep you all posted as the days roll by.

Jan 1st 1942

Today marks the arrival of the USS Yorktown on the west Coast. She immediately will be put to work. We now have three carriers in the pacific.

Well the new year sees a little better fortune with the forces around Pearl. KB seems to be pulling back slightly.. maybe they ran out of torpedoes and bombs? ASW fleets mange to sink 2 Subs. That brings the War’s total to 6 Jap subs sunk.

----------------------------------
ASW attack at 111,69

Japanese Ships

In Singapore a huge air strike comes in today.. Hammering the fields there. Though the runways stay open no attacks are launched today.

Fighting rages in Mersing still. The Aussies are doing a wonderful job but their days are numbered.

In China ground combat continues in Ichang and Nanchang. Chinese forces are redeploying and digging in across the front.

Jan 2nd

The Captain lowered his binoculars and gave his crew a grim smile. “well done boys. At least now the Enterprise will rest a little easier.” In the distance the keel of the Japanese Carrier Taiyo disappeared into the murky darkness.

G3M Nell x 9

Allied aircraft
CW-21B Demon x 3

In Singapore the Japanese return with two separate attacks and over 160 bombers.. They plaster the field but notice that the air strips are oddly empty.

In Mersing the fighting continues. A large surface fleet bombarded the defenders but they held out another day.

In China fighting continues in Ichang and the Japanese Army chases the Chinese out of Wuhan.

In Nanchang fighting continues… Ggraven can’t like the fact that these troops are here.

In the P.I. The Japanese Capture Moulmien

In Mersing the fighting continues. A large surface fleet bombarded the defenders but they held out another day.

In the most alarming news of the Day PBYs out of Canton spots an approaching surface group heading inbound. It will make landfall in a couple of days. I have nothing to contest the landing with the sinking of my only surface units last week at the hands of KB. My Carriers are out of position on the west coast trying to fill their air groups with F4F-4s.
