Luzon falls

Post by sveint »

March 20 - Luzon falls.

Japan offensive operations will now continue. (Note that as this was my first game, I had no plans beyond "take what Japan did historically". Basically I am adapting my plans to what the Allies do. Java will be next - Andy knows this already - as I need the oil and resources and because he has massively reinforced the island. It will be a big battle.)

Indian Ocean - I wanted Andaman as a recon base. Got me a bit more info than I wanted, but at least I will see all his ships as they approach. I've gone on the defensive here and intend to stay on it. My main forces are based in Bangkok to rest (Temperate Zone).

China - I'm taking a shot at invading beyond the rail lines. It doesn't look too good, China has alot of men and my troops move slowly. I'll try to attack and if the odds aren't good I'll go back to the rail lines and defend. If it looks like I can advance with only moderate casaulties I will try to conquer China.

DEI - only Java remains in Allied hands (as well as non-resources islands like Bali and Timor). Allied forces on the island are MASSIVE. He also has ALOT of airpower. As far as I see it I need to take the island, and the only way to do so will be through a major landing the size of D-Day. All forces from Luzon are being redirected here - they are a bit understrenght but have very high experience and morale. If all goes well I will be able to destroy many of his units, worst case it will be a slugfest I can hardly afford. I don't really think he can prevent me from taking the island though - it's too early in the war for that.

The fortress of Bataan fell after minimal resistance.

As sveint appears to have guessed I have re inforced Java and will attempt to hold it.

Had he held off another month I would be confident of causing mayhem there.

But May is still a long way off when I can upgrade UK Airgroups and my Spits dont arrive until June.

So an early invasion may stop me holding.

I cannot believe Sveint when he says he is defensive in Burma India. It could be a deception plan ;)

I have formed a very very powerful Corps in central India as my rapid reaction force consisting of 2 Elite Inf Divisions and 2 Armoured Bdes.

I would LOVE to commit that force to Java or Burma but I dare not take them off the rail net until I am certain he is fully committed in SOPAC JAVA or anywhere else.

He has a lot of forces to play with between Phillipines and Malayan armies and I need to be very careful not to leave India exposed.

I think Java is next but I cannot afford to take risks with India.

I have committed a US medium bomber gp to Java to replace 2 of the B17 Gps that I have evacced after the kicking they took at Batavia

RE: Luzon falls

OK as I see it Sveint has 4 main options for the invasion of Java.

He can hit Kragen the main port off the rail net and try and split my army in two between north and south.

He can attack in the north at Batavia or the south ant Soerbijou

or he can try to hit Tijilip

If we has the forces he could try two of the four at the same time.

I have to expect major CV cover and BB led bombardment forces so here is a challenge for the Allied players out there I reckon he will hit me 1st week in April +/- a week how should I defend ?

I have most of the MAG and the Dutch Army at my disposal plus a few other formations that have re inforced the island say about 4 or 5 Divisional equivelents and enough air power to put a dent in anyones navy.

(I hasten to add I think I will lose but I want to delay as long as I can)

My decision to abandon Singapore in this game was based on this ultimate fight as I decided that fighting in Java would be more profitable as Sveint would have to ship everything in which would tie up his navy and airforce in a (hopefully) long campaign

The usefull thing that the extra time has bought me is that Allied MAG forces are actually strong but are heavily disrupted at start of game the 3 month respite my evac bought me has allowed these formations to recover strength.

Any thoughts from others out there on how I should fight this one or have I wasted my time and the lives of my soldiers and airmen ?

I'd say - put roughly equal-sized forces at Batavia, Soerbaja, and Kragen. Tjilijap is a bit too hard to get to, I think.

If sveint agrees not to look Ill do a seperate thread with detailed ORBAT AAR and commentary from my side of the hill specifically for the couple of weeks of the upcoming Battle of Java.

I cannot reveal all my defensive plans in this thread as I know Sveint will read it ;)

Sveint tries to be sneaky in china with his paras and runsinto 2 corps of Chinese troops

Defensive preparation continues in India and Java.

3 Commonwealth Divisions (3 x 3 Brigade Equivalents plus engineer support) have been formed to support the 2 Dutch Divisions (5 Inf Regts and 12 Battalions) in defending Java.

Backing them is the Brigade sized Phillipine Volounteer Force.

In addition un named forces are held in Java Army Group Reserve.

The only problem with trying to defend Java is the ease with which IJN bombardments can hit northern Java.

If sveint agrees not to look Ill do a seperate thread with detailed ORBAT AAR and commentary from my side of the hill specifically for the couple of weeks of the upcoming Battle of Java.

If you want, we can do what PzB and Wobbly are doing - post in different threads and not look at each other's posts.
