Aye I must admit my Java battle aint going to well.

Those dammed CA bombardments are just doing to much damage and my CV gp that was going to put a stop to it was sunk

If CA's can bombard for 5k atime I may as well give up now thats just incredible ;(

I am not optimistic abot my ability to hold Java in the face of that level of bombardment

2 CVs were going to stop my bombardments?

You made the decision to hold Java, now you get to live with the consequences. Even if I take the island it will take a long time and wear my troops down. That means no other Japanese conquests until 1943, by which time it is probably too late for Japan.

Which was my strategtic rationale for holding but seeing 5 - 10k of troops killed each time you bombard is discouraging. I hope to drag this out into a real pitfight

And you are really doing the correct thing keeping your zeroes concentrated escorting the bombers in I cannot make a dent as long as you stay concentrated so each day an airfield gets pounded.

As for night bombing.

I am using liberators at night as its suicide to go against your cap.

Thats what has me looking at my Indian Defences very carefully.

I am making sure that I dont over extend at the moment.

Between holding Burma (I still hold Rangoon) and My defence of java I need to be very carefull not to strip India to bare to make it tempting for Sveint to try.

Given the effectiveness of night bombing I am restricting myself to no more than 2 US bomber sqns and one Dutch Sqn at a time otherwise its a tad unfair. (I will however use any RAF Sqns I get at night without restriction)

China may be a problem for the allies and those bombardment runs are annoying.

My mines are starting to get dense enough to cause problems.

Unfortuantely the lil Mk 10 mines are just not damaging enough.

You should pull the air units in Batavia back to Tjilitjap (if you've built up the airbase) or somewhere safe from bombardments. It's just too vulnerable, methinks.[:)]

Actually it has nothing to do with that. But if China gives me a gift of armies I can surround that is fine.

The simple reason is that trying to take all of China head on is too costly vs. the rewards. It's much easier to defend on the rail lines and keep the Chinese confined to the interior.

Allied air power in Java is taking a real kicking I am dispersing and trying to plau a shell game but I am losing lots of aircraft every turn.

In China things are hotting up. I have sent a lot of firepower after Changsa to try and spoil the IJA attack it seems to have worked (although Sveint may as he says just be deciding China is not worth the grief).

Allied Thoughts on the War todate

We are now in mid April several things have went well others not so well.

Rangoon/ Burma

I think the allies did well here we defeated the 1st IJA offensive and threw them back out of Burma and they have yet to come back. I think they will eventually and kick me out but I am hoping not until after Java is decided. Overall I think Allies are ahead on this one.

Malaya

I lost Malaya a month early but managed to evacuate the full MAG almost intact to aid my stand on Java where the IJA cannot get at me by Land. I also gave my CW forces 3 valuable months to recover disabled units by this move. (BTW In my opinion this allowing me to evac was Sveints main mistake in this game he should have taken the bomber losses to sionk my transports)

Java

So far mixed I would say Sveint has an endge due to hi bombardments and skillful use of air ... BUT it will take a long time to grind down Java so I am sure I will see something spectacular from the IJN soon)

DEI

My consolidation of forces on Java left the rest of the DEI open. Major IJN victory here in time scale terms.

Phillipines

Allies got there heads kicked in Sveint ended Allied resistance a lot earlier than I would have liked.

South Pac

Draw I think so far not a lot of action probably as Java is sucking up IJA forces.

Cent Pac

Quiet

China

Stalemate Sveint launched an offensive towards Kweiyang and was doing well but it was expensive. He has now withdrawn just in time to stop a Chinese offensive aimed at Changsa.

Naval

After a mediocre Pearl Harbour for Sveint in terms of ships sunk the IJN has came back with a bang.

4 RN BB's or BC's have been sunk including 2 R Class BB's and POW as well as 2 CV's in return I have sank two IJN BB's.

I think that puts the IJN ahead so far. The only good news is that to be blunt I can afford to lose two R class BB's more than the IJN can afford to lose two BB's although in terms of warships the Allies have not done well so far against the IJN.

Depemding on what you think one of two things is my main mistake so far

1. My use of Naval forces and the casualties I have taken
2. Deciding to defend Java

Time will tell which of my mistakes is bigger.

Nice summary. Just want to add that it was a first game for me so I didn't really have any strategy but "try to do what Japan did historically".

So far I really like this game as it has a fairly historical "what if" feeling to it.

With hindsight my approach to Java was too slow and my approach on Burma was pointless. I am now trying to rectify those mistakes. It's going to be a long and bloody war.

As for the Japanese situation:

China: The railroads are conquered and it's time for defense. Once my troops are in position I think this will be a very quiet front until 1944 or 1945. Perhaps a few divisions can be spared for defense of Thailand.

DEI: All except Java in my hands. Taking Java is going to be long, hard and bloody. Really not sure how it will turn out, allthough my plans are laid out. Fighting for the island will mostly likely take all of 1942 and I wouldn't be surprised if we're still fighting there in 1943.

Pacific: Like Andy says, not much going on. I'm building defenses - I'm not for a second believing he won't try something here.

As always my carriers are in reserve close to the front. Two of them are lightly damaged but fully operable.

Major Japanese reorganisation of air units this turn. Alot of tired pilots sent home and many new units fly in to DEI. Even some new experimental aircraft...

Bugger just what the allies need another IJN fighter that can wipe the floor with most allied fighters.

Ahh well only 4 weeks until spitfires start arriving then we shall see who has air superiority.....

(Despite my fondest wishes one sqn of Spits will not have that much impact)

If I have miscalculated on Java Sveint could end up with a massive points lead in army units destroyed.........

In a shake up of command structures
General Wavell took command of ABDA in overall command of Java theatre and with direct responsability for Northern Java
Lt General Alexander took command of Malaya Army Group with responsability for central Java today.
Lt General Roosevelt was appointed to command the shattered USAFFE with responsability for South Java.

In all media Allied sources quote Marshall Petain ...."they shall not pass".... Allied soldiers claim they will make Java into the grave for thousands of Japanese soldiers as they prepare for the onslought on Batavia.
