March on Matrix! WITP Players Unite!

RE: maybe it's the mods
You have a bigger problem than me then. I can still use ctl/alt/del to see what is running, but it will lock up completely if I try to end the program.
Still smell like the same thing though. It was a known problem with ME.

I ceased to be friendly with Mogami and Frag a LLOOONNGGG time ago. I don't intend to start now.
I raise my hand in support of Mogami, Mikuma and Frag. They have been willing and very helpful, are always around and have a genuine interest in improving the game and supporting the community.
If there is some area for improvement that I can identify, is that both are too democratic on letting people speak their rants here. Both are exemplary moderators and testers, and I express my thanks for the work they do.

I try not to bash them at all. But I will say that resistance to Japanese upgrade paths got under my skin.

Hi, I just want to be clear here.
I am in favor of human controlled upgrade paths.
I worry about AI controlled upgrade paths.

Alrighty then. I can live with that.
Should not be too hard to do. GG did it in BTR, PacWar and the AI handled it.

This game does not have a learning curve. It has a learning cliff.

RE: maybe it's the mods
You've probably said this in another thread - but what OS are you running ?
The only regular crash issue I have is from the ship availability screen - if I hit back instead of exist - I get CTD everytime, multiple different machines consistently.
But I'm running XP Pro SP2 and not having any other issues.
Any chance you've been infected by virus' ? If a virus infects some of your OS files and you delete them ... then you may have to re-install the OS ( you can try repair first ).

As if the rest of us give a $hit! This sort of crap wastes bandwidth and is just meaningless drivel.

Leader bug is in unmodified scenarios ... I've got A. Mongomery commanding the IJN Bombardment group containing Kongo and Haruna ... and other such craziness. Haven't pin-pointed what pre-requisites are. I do use "Autocommander on" a lot ... and my guess is the problem is in there.

"what is the nature of the whole,
and what is my nature, and how this is related to that, and what
kind of a part it is of what kind of a whole;"
Hi, Since there are few bugs that appear in every game we have to learn what is different in games where they appear compared to games where they do not appear.
Are the conditions existing in all games and only met by a few or is something from outside being introduced. (By this I mean is there a weakness in the code that allows a bug to be created under circumstance or is the program being advesely effected by something that exists on some machines but not others. [video card, TSR, OS)
If it were simply bad code it would always appear in every game.
Since the game does run without producing bugs for some and not for others the answer is to be found it what exists in one place but not the other.

It seems that there are a lot less strange happenings when all aspects of this game are done on manual control. Just an observation on my part.
Besides, then I can only blame myself when I botch a move. Instead of the game.[:D]

"There are too many leaders to track manually. I don't think the leader bug will ever be found waiting for the magic saved game.
If Matrix will release the saved game file format or a debug version that allows reading of the saved game data, I will write a program that checks the leader, status, and their location against multiple saved games. Then it's just a matter of playing the game and saving each turn, the program could then check and log each leader, location and status for each saved game. "
Given that at least one consensus I've read here is that this does appear to be either
random in nature or occurs for several reasons which are a result of multiple sequential activities which makes it appear random, I think the suggestion above is the only prudent one. Turn the AI against itself and have an automated/semi-automated routine that checks the leaders. Either 2by3 does it, or they should permit (at a minimum) some select forum members who can do this the ability. Frankly, I've never fully understood the concern about opening the save game file structure (though they could compromise and open only one side so the other player can't see the other). If this game had a ladder system for pbem, then cheating is a potential concern. However, this will never have a ladder system. An automated search is the only effective means of tracking this down (or as many of the sequences which produces it). Now I presume that this decision would not rest with Frag or Mogami (my guess), but with 2x3.
Come on Joel, lets here directly from 2by3 on this one.

I will say that the AI in this game is better than the AI in the games that I first started playing. No matter how much time I gave the AI back then, it never even moved a single cardboard counter![:D]
The only time I could get it to move was when the cat knocked over a stack of units. That was before I started using magnetic holders.[:D]

Here - here !
The "old AI" was definitely worse !
Also a para-phrase from Sid Mier. "If you think you can do better - here is a C++ compiler and a paint program - go show us how it's done" !

So your solution is that I get f#cked out of my eighty bucks because your pals can't design a game that runs on my box without putting Darth Vader in charge of my X-wing fighter squadrons?
I expected better from you, Russ.

No, but I'm having more and more trouble figuring out whether I should be Randall Patrick McMurphy (loudmouth smart@$$) or the Chief (pseudo deaf mute). So far, I haven't made a run for Canada.ORIGINAL: Mogami

I disagree
Currently I have a rather curious situation on my machine.
If I turn on my computer and do nothing, within 3 or 4 minutes it locks up.
If I turn on my computer and go online within 3 or 4 minutes my machine locks up.
If however I run WITP (or any program) my machine does not lock up.
In order to post this message I have WITP running in the background (doing my morning PBEM turns)
If I exited WITP and tried to remain here and post my machine would lock up.
I've tried everything I know to fix this but I don't understand where to begin.
Funny, I experiended lock ups with my machine for some time when I was playing games that used directX... Mostly appeared when playing UV and Witp. I tried everything to fix that, and got my computer bit more stabilised. But still experienced those lock ups and I had to turn power off everytime it happened.
Then in my computers power supply some circuit burned. I bought new one, and no more lock ups... Point is that you have a wery good chance of being out of luck with your lock ups
