RE: How far you got?
1AUG42, Allies vs AI
Pearl Harbor - minimal damage. I opted for the variable start and lucked out by having the AAF on full aler tan amanged to shoot down about half the IJN forces. Only lost 1 BB and a few smaller ships.
Having played naval strategist before, I opted to play the game using the last version of WPO: Rainbow Five/WPL-46. This Mid-41 plan called for the reinforcement of Wake and sending supplies and aid to Oz to help them keep Rabaul. At Wake, the Lex didn't run back to PH Capt Sherman was ordered to reinforce the island and in doing so sank the AI invasion fleet and got a glancing blow against Ryujo. At Rabaul, I managed to get the "Bird Battalions" into Rabaul before the AI could invade. I sent the 1st USMC there as quickly as they could go. The first elements got to Rabaul about the same time as the AI. The ABDA command was ordered to fall back into defensible positions as quickly as possible, and they ended up concentrated on Timor and the NW tip of Sumatra. I tried to march the Brits out of Singapore, but the computer kept sending them right back!! That's about where the lines stabilized. Tarawa remained in US possession as I landed 1/3 of an RCT there (a BCT/Battalion Combat Team?). The AI got no further than Celebes & Truk towards Rabaul/New Guinea and it has driven it "crazy" ever since.
In about Mid-January the Allies started to get enough resupply to make advances ... all in line with WPL-46 ... and managed to take Makin, then Mili. The AI keeps sending ships to their doom in a Truk-Rabaul version of the Tokyo Express. By 1JUL42 I owned almost all of the Marshalls, all of the Gilberts, Marcus Is., all of the Solomons, Bismark Archipeligo, New Guinea, the ABDA areas SE of Sulawesi/Celebes. Overall in a good place to hold the AI and begin to advance. it is M+270 and I am ready to hold what I have taken and develop my Base One at Eniwetok (I am about 90 days behind schedule)
On 7JUL42, the AI decided to seal its fate. It sent a 7 CV TF against Rabaul. In a 5 day runnign battle, I managed to sink all 7 CVs (Soryu, Junyo, Akagi, Shokaku, Kaga, Zuiho, Hiryu) and many escorts. To date I have lost Tennessee (@ PH), Colorado & New Mexico to Bettys with torpedoes, and Lexington to a sub attack. I got the Lex back to a freindly port, but the DC couldn't fix the torpedo damage and she eventually flooded and sank at the pier. I am finally beating the AI on ship and aircraft points. It'll take a lot to win back the army/base points but the gap is only some 2500 poins right now.
If I'm lucky the war will be over by Summer of 44.
Which raises another question ... how does the game end? Will Hirohito surrender or will I have to blockade, plan an invasion and then nuke Japan?

Automatic victory = 4x's vp's more than opponent in 1943
=3x's vp's in 1944
=2x's vp's in 1945
or ignore auto victory and nuke them but don't do it more than twice or you negate all of your great playing up until then.[;)]

Tankerace... why not require a certain level of "Resources" to be captured for Japanese capital ship use. The "Free supply" mentioned above are those at the few Chinese bases that get an automatic supply in the same way that Karachi, Bombay, San Francisco and Seattle do. But since Japan went to war for the resources, the resources on the map can be used to reflect the coal needs of the older vessels.

Games been out a while now.
Against AI as japan Im entering 43 (and other than PM and darwin have not been non historical at all )
Anyone gone further.??
I took PM early and AI did the suicide thing for a while, and one mad cross the map from India via the phillipines cruise with 2 british CVs (that it got away with!![X(][X(]) other than that it is playing pretty well, still very defensive
How about you guys
Jan 43 AI game. Evact'd Sing, got proportion of the troops out to Sumatra then India, the rest died heroically. Held Japs at Impala and kicked them back out of Akabar (Spelling?) on the coast. Moved dutch back to sumatra and Timor. Still holding Sabajara and Timor in 43 although it has cost me 20 transport sunk and 30 damaged + most of the dutch fighter force getting supplies into malang. Dutch and Raf/RAAf bombers and torp planes smacked the hell out of invasion force which is probably why i managed to hold sabajara with out re-enforcing with other allied troops. Timor was mainly held by the Aus bird forces. The Rabul garrison was removed by fast AP's covers by Aus and NZ cruisers, the engineers went to pm and the troops to Timor.
Hold PM and Lunga, Nidi, and Baker Islands with marnies and cd engineers and lots of mines. About to smack the hell out of Tarawa and Makin Islands with seven carriers 6 battleships + escorts and two full divison of troops back by engineers, arty HQ and a baseforces. Lost 1 Achilies to betties and loads of DD, mostly flush deckers to IJN subs and quite a few subs. Lost no major naval units yet although a lot have been damaged especially RN BB's Have damaged two jap BB and one carrier but sunk nothing larger than a CL.
AI has not touched PM or lunga apart from Bombing and has not really raided the IO either.....

Hi, If you add all my PBEM together I have done over 500 turns...........
I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

I read that, but what does it mean? You can nuke the entire home islands back to the stone age and lose anyway?
A small scenario for an atomic attack would be interesting to play and see if the IJA can shoot the plane down. Knowing my luck.....
Also, there was never an option presented to replicate the Doolittle Raid in Apr42. Hornet was on the west coast and I halfway expected to have a unit of 16 B-25Cs show up in SFO.

RE: How far you got?
Sorry no Doolittle Raid. There is a 1 grade penalty for using 3 or more A Bombs. So that if you win decisively but use 3+ A bombs your victory is reduced to marginal.[:(]ORIGINAL: jdcorley

So I can nuke Tokyo twice if I want to. Is there a restriction to keep me from nuking any particular city or am I stuck with the Hiroshima/Nagasaki pair?
I don't think it'll be an issue in the game I'm playing now, as I am almost even in points in Aug42. I am guessing I'll have victory by Summer 44 at this rate.
RE: How far you got?
You can overide victory conditions,as I have because I wanted to do the Nuclear option. You can nuke any city that is within your aircraft range. I also invaded manland to see how difficult it would be. But if you go past Feb 1946 you lose 2 levels of victory e.g. decisive to draw and do 3 A Bombs = Jap marginal victory![X(]ORIGINAL: jdcorley

Ok, its FEB46, the Jap cities have been burned out, nuked and/or invaded, they have no industry or organized military left and they somehow manage to win?! (I guess they win because the UN would be shortly formed and strongly chide the US for going too far.)

Its a Japanese "victory" because they held out longer and fought hard enough to force the US to level the Home Islands. Basically the player would have done much better than the real Japan did before the massively overwhelming US forces buried them.

RE: How far you got?
Playing the allied side. Have taken most historical objectives(not yap). Have taken most of the PI and the islands around it. Still fighting in burma and south of it.
The ai still putting up a fight(not like a human) but not bad either. Playing on hard.
Point spread is something like 43k for the japs and allied is around 57k (i think).
Playing one day turns. Once in a great while two day turns.[:D]

In current First World morality, all war is a crime. Its just that, like homicide, it is sometimes justified.

RE: How far you got?
Looks like most guys are playing as the allies, any Jap players vs an Allied AI?
Was really wondering how the AI goes in an allied counter offensive, and when does it kick off?
It has been very passive late 42, but Im having a good time still trying to upgrade, train squadrons, and balance PP spending on new troops, or squadron deployment.
I also try (against the AI) to realistically rotate troops back to Japan for R and R.
I did try to take Midway in July 42, and lost badly, invasions are tricky!!!

RE: How far you got?
Once I finish with the current war, I hope to reply the war as the Jap side. Hopefully, there will be the "Dec 1, 1941-march 1946" version I keep hearing about as I'd like to move on Hawaii with more than just CVs!! How about AB Kaui to keep PH busy?
