Why WITP running so slow?
I mean, I understand it needs to do a lot of checking each turn, but still can't justify the speed it is running. Is there anyway to optimize it? I would guess even an optimized recompiling might help...

No offence man. This topic was beaten to death. There is a small button 'Search" over there. You should try it. It works.[:D]

RE: Why WITP running so slow?
I am running this on a 8086 (with a maths co proccesor!!!). I have been running this comp since 1994. I am also using this comp to regulate my home lighting ( when I am out). My central heating, washing machine, my wife's dildo setting etc... Oh yeah forgot to say WitP plays very slow on it - unlike my wife............

Lets be nice now [:-]
What is your system ... have you set the delays on the Preferences screen?

Whats your RAM?
I've had a bit of an Improvement since I sticked another 256MB stick in with my 256MB for 512MB RaM
Difference is instead of 60-100MB free of 256MB its 280MB-380MB free out of 512MB
and so the game has less need to use virtual Ram (HD space Ram)
Noise? What Noise? It's sooooo quiet and Peaceful!

I run the game on Celeron 500 with 192 megs of RAM and Win 98. I have animations, sound etc. off..only combat reports popping up.
I did use -nodelay in shortcut...donno if it does anything, but I have impression that several phases run lot faster. At least it shows on my comp like that. Can usually calculate the Long Campaign turn within 15 mins. Not a biggie, since planning is the most time-consuming phase..[:)]
Cheers,

I am running on a XP1700+ with 1G memory, not too shabby, huh?
I have changed all delays to 0.1s, but still annoying slow
I hope I don't have to upgrade to Athlon64

When did you last defrag your HD? I have an Athlon 2600 and 512 RAM and it runs sweet, 10 minutes with animations and delays of 1 second.

ehh......you call 10 minutes sweet? I am expecting something around 30 seconds
But you are right, I havn't defrag for years....let me give it a try.

RE: Why WITP running so slow?
I posted this in a separate thread...
I'm running on Pentium 4 3Ghz, w/ 512mb ram. Just purchased the game (v1.4) last friday...Last night at 1:00am local time set the game up in comp vs comp mode, with a three day turn cycle (may have been continuous) and messages set at .1. I then let it run. This morning approx 5.5 hours later the game had processed approximately 45 days as it was 01/23/1942 when I was allowed to resume control. My rough math estimated it would take roughly 180 hrs for the game to play itself to mid December 1945 with the comp issuing orders.
Cheers!

I have a Pentium 4 and have 1GB of ram.
Been slow from day one.
Asked bout this way back but the fanboys said it was not a problem that it was me or the machine.[8|]

Well, the -nodelay works in The Operational Art of War...[:'(]..no reason not to try it with WitP too... Even though I think Norn Koger is bit less megalomaniac game designer...[:D]

You can try some tuning software and guides on the net.
With your machine and delay 0.1 for everything except combat animations you should've been getting 1 turn in 3-5 minutes.
As game progresses turns are taking longer to resolve. This is normal.
I'm AMD guy, but i think that P4 3.5 should have the same performance as my AMD64 3500. I doubt WitP uses 64-bit code.
Now memory could be CAS 2.5 or 3.0, performance difference is around 5%, if you add double channel you'll get another 3-5%. Nvidia logic chipsets are generally faster 1-3% than VIA. So you are getting everywhere these small % and in summary difference could be 20-30%. With 1G RAM i doubt your HDD perf. matters at all.
RE: Why WITP running so slow?
Is the 1GB of ram SD or DDR? 1 GB of SD is about as good as 512 DDR, but a lot slower. If its DDR, then that might be a problem.

I dont think they make mobos for P4s with SD memory.
RE: Why WITP running so slow?
The *biggest* performance hit on this game is having Anti-Virus software running. Turn it off when you are running WitP, there is no need to have it running in the background while you play.

Especially if you use Nortons. I found that Nortons used about 20-25% of available cycles.

RE: Why WITP running so slow?
It is SD ram.
I donot have a anti-virus program.
Ever sence one of the patches came out(can't remember which) the first turn takes about 10 -15 minutes.
That is just the first turn when I start a save game.
On averge one turn after first turn takes bout 5-10 minutes.
