Is Germany at too great a disadvantage? Patch?
Ok, I am in 1944. I have taken SU all the way to Siberia including Caucasus (sp?) and the entire middle east. I have held the Mediterranean until this turn (summer 44) - in other words - I have taken the entire freakin' continent of Europe, plus SU, plus Cairo, middle east..... and I still can't win.
This is on: normal.

you have to repair ressources you've captured or they'll not count for the automatic victory

How can America have so much that it can wage maximum war on both fronts? I even took Scotland and held it for 2 seasons.
It seems almost impossible to win with Axis - and this is only on normal... Granted I have the AI playing Japan; but I figured they'd be sweeping since I held so much of Africa, Middle East, Europe and SU.
Have the playtesters ever won with Germany alone?

Read the latest AAR Joel vs Paul, and see that Axis can win.

I have to admit that these reports of it being difficult to win as Germany at normal level are one of the biggest things making me want this game.
As a long time WWII buff I would pick it up anyway, but I am torn between downloading it tonight vs waiting until my local store gets it in tomorrow so I can have a printed manual.
I will probably end up going the DD route since I work a Sunday through Thursday week meaning that my weekend starts tonight.
As much as I love HOI2, I hate that I have to give the AI ridiculous handicaps to make things challenging.

I do great with Germany until Russia sweeps through me with ease lol. Man I've tried the first campaign at least 5 times already. I'm having a great time though.

Pretty much the same here although I'm on my 3rd game. Playing Germany on just normal settings is pretty difficult so far. The Allies and Russia have such a material advantage it is really quite maddening.
Haven't tinkered with any "alternative" strategies because I have not really mastered the game mechanics in full just yet. Axis and Allies this aint. [;)]
This game is somewhat different, and better, than I thought it would be.

He could be playing tota victory. which means he needs to conquer the world.

My only gripe so far is I don’t like how units can travel so far in just one turn. I love the railway and transport aspect of the game but I think it’s a little too extreme. Russia will declare war and then move (what seems like) everything they have in their arsenal up to my border and just rush me. The U.S has a habit of sling shoting an infinite amount of goodies over at me every turn as well. I think no matter how many transports you have lined up or how many railroads you have in perfect working order, it should take a little longer.
Hmm I don’t think it’s on total victory. All the settings are on default as far as gameplay. I’m just playing the first campaign set as normal.

Remember, these turns cover 3 months. Re: USA...submarines, submarines, submarines...break that line of transports. And heavy bombers may help degrade an enemy's rail system (?).

Please do NOT make it easier for Germany to win. It -should- be very very hard to conquer the world as Germany.

The most ideal opening I've found for Germany is taking the Low Countries, France, and Yugoslavia on your first turn. I then move half my artillery and four fighters or so onto Paris (where my armor is), along with some militia. Mass in Yugoslavia in the East.
Next turn has me taking Spain and Greece. Following turn I take Gibraltar and fill it with arty, fighters, and tactical bombers. My subs (researched and prodcued heavily in Italy) use this as a base of ops.
This puts me in line for a Summer and not Spring invasion of Russia, but the three resources in Spain and the enormous tactical significance of Gibraltar are worth a turn, I think. I then generally wack on Russia and kill WA transports. After Pearl Harbor, I fill the Atlantic with at least 12 3-3 or 3-4 subs and watch them twitch.
Then, of course, the computer US begins kicking the living hell out of the computer Japan, and all hell breaks loose. [:@]

Is Germany at a disadvantage........well Yeh!!! But there is a remedy. Remember Germany has a partner. Time for you German boys to become the Axis boys. The pathway to victory is a two pronged approach. Come on, I know you guys can handle Japan too!
RE: Is Germany at too great a disadvantage? Patch?
Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting his butt kicked as Germany on normal. I think it's great! Too often in this games I roll all over all of Europe as Germany and then get bored. I have yet to win as Germany in this one.
Japan is next on my list to try -- possibly in a PBEM.

nice strat literati, I was thinking of something similair last night, but I'm going to try yours tonight.
Last night I tried the yugoslavia attack first turn as someone else had suggested and it works terrific. I think thats a natural from now on for germany players.

I have some questions.
What do you hit Spain/Gibraltar with?
On my first turn, I have done exactly what you do, (Is Denmark considered a Low Country? as I take that as well) - however, when I have then rushed Spain with about 8 or so infantry after bombing it - I take it with losses and then WA usually places a shitload of troops in Gibraltar.... and I can take it but with such heavy losses I've questioned its worth.
But maybe I'm missing something....
Could you spell out the troops/units you use?
Btw, when people say they use air power on ships - that means you click on them and attack correct? They don't automatically attack in some fashion do they? Some of the posts confuse me

Thx,
J

What do you hit Spain/Gibraltar with?
I'm typing from memory, here, as my wife has taken my wargaming machine. She's still, after five years, under the mistaken impression that the wargaming box is something called a 'computer' and that one can do more than fight WW2 countless times on it. Women. I'll never understand them.
TURN ONE
Denmark: 1 infantry, auto-win.
Netherlands: 2 arty and infantry to the point where I get a good %.
Yugoslavia 1: One fighter/bomber from Italy to unlock surrounding areas.
Yusgoslavia 2: Gangbang by surrounding units. Always messy (lose four militia, usually).
Paris: All of my armour and bombers.
^ The bombers are very important to keep armour loss to a minimum.
Misc: Repair select trains and resources, move to threaten Greece and move at least 4 fighters/2 flak to Paris.
TURN TWO
Greece: with whatever is down there. Isn't hard.
Spain 1: All armour/fighters/flak attack. I usually do NOT include arty, as they will die, and I want them in Gibraltar.
Misc: Repair Spain's rails. Move all available tactical bombers to Spain, along with more fighters if you think you'll need them. You can also move as many infantry there as you like by rail. When I play this opening, Gibraltar is the ONLY attack I will do the folllowing turn.
TURN THREE
Gibraltar: By any means necessary. Bombers/fighters help a lot if they have been reinforced by London. I usually DO use a couple arty. They will die, but a good combined force of air and arty with armour leading the way will not take unreasonable damage.
Btw, when people say they use air power on ships - that means you click on them and attack correct? They don't automatically attack in some fashion do they? Some of the posts confuse me(sigh, lol, 35 and my brain cells seem to be dying)
Fighters will interdict from islands and inlets just like arty, but mostly it's just sending the planes out and bombing, if I understand your question.
