AH's 3RD Reich compared too WAW

Gary Grigsby's World At War gives you the chance to really run a world war. History is yours to write and things may turn out differently. The Western Allies may be conquered by Germany, or Japan may defeat China. With you at the controls, leading the fates of nations and alliances. Take command in this dynamic turn-based game and test strategies that long-past generals and world leaders could only dream of. Now anything is possible in this new strategic offering from Matrix Games and 2 by 3 Games.

Avalon Hill, heck I lived 4 miles from there when I was kid. That is how I got hooked. Jeez, I had 3R (my second favorite). When Squad leader came out, I was in heaven. I also had Blitzkrieg (mediocre), Russian Campaign (very cool), Anzio (mediocre), Cross Of Iron (sequel to Squad Leader, great sequel), Panzer Leader, Panzer Blitz.., Then my first PC wargame was Civil War General in 1995.., my life (horribly addicted since then). Man, as I type this.., I am nuts!! But I never did drugs or drank too much, so wargames saved me from that stuff.., I am trying to legitimize spending 80% of my life on these dang wargames!!!!!! Alright, I will be looking for a PBEM player by the weekend, I have to read the rule book. Man, I feel another 5 months of life being flushed down the toilet.., man, these dang wargames!!!!!!!

Somebody actually beta-tested the old AH Third Reich computer game? Omg, that game was so damm buggy and they never came close to patching all the bugs it had. Now that Hasbro has bought out AH, we'll never see anymore of Third Reich. But, as people have said there is 'A World at War' AWAW. I helped with some play&rule testing and the game was GW2K before that. Best game you'll ever play for people that want an in-depth global strategic simulation of WWII. There are ways to play it PBEM (warplanner), but only talk of a way to play realtime against humans remotely. I'm very happy with the 1st go-round of WAW, but I do think many improvemets could be made in the GUI and some simple additions to unit experience and diplomacy for neutrals. If anybody wants to PBEM AWAW(not WAW) let me know.

I was also weened on 3R and SL. This game fits in with them nicely me thinks. I played 3R while in the navy against some serious opposition, fists nearly flew over rules disputes during nearly every game. Ahhh, the good ol days!

For all you fans of 3R. How many of you got into A3R? Global War? A World at War?

These titles are the evolution of the game. AH gave the rights back to Bruce Harper and GMT now produces AWAW.

There is currently a PBEM version of AWAW at www.warplanner.com.

There is a yahoo discussion group for AWAW at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/aworldatwar/

The offical website is www.aworldatwar.com

If you liked the 3R boardgame, you will like AWAW boardgame. For those who want a PC game with AI, it should be out next year.

I annually attended the convention to play AWAW. I met Mark Buttazoni there too. I saw his demo for WAW there.

AH used to have a yearly convention in the Hunt Valley Marriott. That hotel is located in Maryland, north of Baltimore. Don Greenwood, a former employee of AH took over the gaming event. The event continued to be held there until this year. There is over 100 different games played there with people from all over the world attending. A lot of old AH games are played, but the convention is no longer restricted to AH games.

This year it will be held in August at the Lancaster Resort Hotel. For more info go to http://www.boardgamers.org/

FYI, I too use to go to the downtown AH store at St Paul & Read streets and buy my game and parts!

I was a beta on computer 3R also. AH was ONLY interested in the play of the AI from us (AI never even once threw the Brits out of France in 1940 in the hungreds of games I played). We ALL begged for a play by E mail function, we ALL gave them lists and lists of bugs that needed to be fixed. They werent interested. They didnt even attempt to put an E mail function into it until after it was released. Please dont blame the testers. We did our best to get them to listen. 3R was always and probably still is my favorite game of all time, but I havent played the computer version since release.

I wrote an article for "The General" once outlining my "fool-proof" plan to win the game as Japan after Harper poo-pooed my initial claims on a board on comp-u-serve. AH never published it of course (my first sentance was "DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!"). Sometime after reading it, the Vancouver boys decided to re-design the game. Never heard anything back from them, so I guess my "fool-proof" plan really was. [:D]

There was a way at one time to take Tahiti and Pearl Harbor, raid into the Pacific, and use Strategic Warfare to cripple the US from getting back into the Pacific theatre. This was adjusted many years ago and such now is no tthe case. Is this what you refer? There was also a time where the Japs could declare war early and help force a British Surrender. Now this would crippled the Japanese in the mid game. Have you seen the new version?

No, my strat went the other way. Do nothing as Jap (at most limited offensives in China). Dont build anything that triggered an "up" on the entry chart, and the earliest time the US can declare war on Japan is Spring 44. This gives the US 6 turns to build their forcepool and conquer Japan. Cant be done.
