Manual clarification request (damaged air units retreat to factory)...

Post by Apollo11 »

Hi all,

In manual it says:
8.5.13 SPECIAL MOVEMENT OF DAMAGED UNITS
AFTER COMBAT (DECLARED COMBAT AND OP-FIRE)
After combat and any retreat from combat called for is completed, all damaged units automatically attempt to move
to a friendly factory (or for naval units, a region with a port and a factory that can repair the naval unit). For a unit in
a battle in a land region, as long as the unit can trace a legal movement path not through enemy controlled areas
(of any length) to a friendly factory, the unit is removed from the map and placed in the Production Pool according to
the rules for repairing damaged units. The path may go through allied areas and ground units may trace through
sea zones if occupied by friendly transports. For a unit in a battle in a sea region, it need not trace a path of friendly
zones in order to be placed on a Factory. A damaged unit will attempt to move to a Factory with the same
nationality as the unit (if possible). A unit will not go to a factory in a Politically Frozen area if there is a factory it can
reach in an unfrozen area.
If no legal path exists, the unit is destroyed. Units do not suffer Op-Fire during this special movement.

This is (somewhat) clear regarding land and naval units.

But what happens to air units that wage combat over land and get damaged (if that land is not connected to other friendly land nor connected via sea by friendly transport fleets)?

In recent PBEM I played my opponent's land units that were damaged in above circumstances were destroyed (because they were unable to retreat to his friendly factory) but his damaged air units flew (how can damaged unit fly?) to his near-by friendly territory (range = 2) and after that to factory (this is what animation showed)...

Is this OK (i.e. working as designed) or, perhaps, the same rules should apply to damaged air units as they apply to damaged land/naval units?

I think it's working as designed. Refer to special rules for air units - 8.7.3.

Hi all,
ORIGINAL: Oleg Mastruko

O.

Don't think so...

The paragraph you mention is about retreat from combat and not about damaged units. The only paragraphs that deals with damaged units is the one I mention in my first post (8.5.13.) ...

In it is clearly written that this (i.e. retreat of damaged units) happens _AFTER_ combat and, therefore, the rule you mention (8.7.3.) does not apply here IMHO...

Can, possibly, someone from Matrix/2By3 please shed some more light on this?

We think it is working as desired. All units retreat (even damaged ones) if forced out of an area, using normal retreat rules. The damaged units only return to the factory after the retreat. Also, air units flying airstrikes return to their original location before going back to a factory.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Ahhh... I think I "see" it now... [:)]

After combat is lost (as in my example) all units will first try to retreat (via means they are capable of - land/sea via transports for land/naval units and air if in range for air units) to nearest possible friendly territory (if possible - if not they are destroyed) and only after that they are returning to factory!

I thought that there was no retreat for damaged units and this is why I asked for clarification... all is clear now...

Thanks for info Joel!
