RE: In the Jaws of the Fortress
Ok, before going working, some more thoughts....
As stated before, i really cannot go any further than Pago Pago and Nanoumea with the courrent RAG ( raid and go ) operation in central pac. Fuel and supply problems are cutting my hopes.
It's been a success so far. If between Pago and Nanoumea i'll take out more 20,000 yankees from the war , after RAG there will be 50,000 americans less to fight in the next months. Not bad.
I was looking for a decisive carrier battle, but it's clear that he doesn't want to engage his carriers now. What i really like is that with Canton in my hands his advance in Central Pac will be delayed at least for 2 more months i guess. And every day i gain is a little victory for japan.
I'll redeploy my forces after Pago and Nanoumea, but i'd like to keep the initiative in my hands, at least for this summer.
I'm thinking about a new big raid. RAG-3. He's now reinforcing Palmyra, so his efforts will be concentrated here i guess for the next weeks.I'd like to change theatre of operations. Up in the north, at ATTU island, he's building his main northern base. already at level 5 AF this base is a direct threat to Paramishiro Jiima. It would be cool to appear suddenly from the fogs of Artic and smash the place with 3 divisions and the entire combined fleet[:D]...well...just an idea...gotta think twice.
BTW i won't defend Canton Island with a lot of troops. I'll leave there 2 naval guard units, 1 constr. unit, 1 CD unit, a little base force and 9 emilies. with these forces i should be safe enough against a light invasion. It's clear that if he wants it back he can have it, but he'll have to committ at least 1 division and his whole CV fleet....and i bet he's not going to risk for the moment. Tarawa now is safe enough. This base will be built and fortified.
I'm building my defences around Rabaul. The first defensive ring will be formed by PM,Lae,Buin and Shortland, while the second ring by Gasmata,Kavieng,Green Island and Rabaul itself. All these bases will be at least level 3 AF ( most of them 4).
Lunga and Tulagi will be just a bait. Very lightly built and fortified, these isles should be a juicy target for him, while my CVs will wait and linger in the shadows[8D]
In one month Manila shuld be ours. This means 70,000 more allied troops in the bag. With this i'll reach the 4-1 ratio[;)]
Then i'll have 5 more Infantry units to use to defend and counterattack!
And if China goes as i'm dreaming.....oh God...can't wait to see Lanchow in my hands and to be free to move the 1st and the 13th Army to Chunking.....4500 Assault points....fresh, experienced troops...fully supplied...with 200 bombers in support.....a Big Big pocket at Chungking...and a storm of victory points...[:D][:D][:D][:D]
Ok, let's stop dreaming...time to take a shower and go to work[>:]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/04/42
He's reacting in China!!!
He moved, probably with an airlift a 3rd unit in Sining and he's sending more units to Chengtu...now 9 units are moving towards my beloved paras.....i'm sending with airlift a 6th SNLF unit from Sian...two more days and it will be completed the operation. Now i have there 240 Assault point but no forts[:(]
He keeps bombing Mandalay and Daily at night. No big news.
My BBs will pound tomorrow Pago Pago, while my divisions are 3 days far away from this island.
Everything is moving between Canton and Nanoumea....
My CVEs intercepted and attacked his AKs convoy moving towards India from Oz. Two AKs sunk and many more damaged. Tomorrow i hope not to lose contact, but bad weather is foreseen.
what else? Nothing i'd say. Gotta wait to see how Pago Pago, Nanoumea and Lanchow operations go

My worst nightmare come true
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/06/42
Today is a sad day for the Empire.
Tonaka, our greatest ace pilot, died tonight during a nightraid of 4E allied bombers at Mandalay.[:(]
27 planes destroyed on the ground last night. The worst day since this night camp has started.
I've finished my Oscars pool and the 110 i produce each months aren't enough.
I'm forced to take them back from the front and use my beloved zeros to close the gap of missing planes....and these are the results[:@]...now even the pilots die during these raids....it's incredible[:o][:-]
BTW, the war goes on. Tomorrow night we'll start landing at Pago Pago.
The bombardments should have smoothed a bit its resistance.
The fuel situation is more than critical.
My CVEs in the Indian Oc. finished their torpedoes and are now going back to Sosabaja. 7 ships sunk and 5 more damaged. Not bad.
In China he moved back one of his unit that covers his left flank to close the supply line of my tanks. No problem. This will open the gate for my 5 units that in 4 days should enter in the contested hex on his left and start to siege Lanchow.
Tomorrow we'll start to airlift a new unit to Chengtu....let's hope they're gonna hold for few more days...
In the PI he's moving one of his div back to Manila from Naga....good! my SNLF unit from Legaspi is ready to enter in Naga and close the supply forniture!

The burma map...
I notice that you are using version 3 of my map, not version 3b. In version 3b the link from Bangkok to Moulmein was changed from a railway to a trail (as it should be). That probably explains the problem with Canton as well.
Andrew
And that explains one thing I wasn't following - that is how he got to Moulmein so fast - took me a month on 3b - very different campaign !

The Americal division no longer exists
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/07/42
A great great day.
what i believed a RCT has revealed to be nothing less than the Americal Division!!![X(][X(][X(]
At Pago my troops landed without any problem ( just a PG damaged) and shock attacked supported by my BBs. He had only that unit there..no CD guns...nothing. Very strange[&:]
BTW we wiped out another brand complete american division from the theatre![:D]
My glens spotted a big concentration of ships at Suva. He's clearly reinforcing it with troops from Oz. I'd like to raid but my closest 1st carrier div is low on fuel and on ordinances. Cannot risk a trap.
My units that took pago pago are already moving back towards Truk, where they will R&R for some weeks.
In the meanwhile the day of nanoumea is getting closer. 3/4 more days and we'll attack!
Another terrible day in the air...well...a terrible night. 10 zeros destroyed and 2 more pilots dead[:@] What in the world can i do!??! Leave Mandalay and Daily undefended? so that he can close them? NO, NEVER!
I've lost 200 planes on the ground in the last month...at this rate i'm going to get low on zeros too[:o]
In China he's moving 5 more units towards Chengtu...hold on guys, please! reinforcements are comming...one more day....
At Sining my tanks entered in the city just to find 7,500 men for 3 units...way too much to attack! I'll stay there and see if he attacks me first.
3 more days and at least 2 of my flanking units will get in the contested hex north of Lanchow...he doesn't seem to move from there[&:]

Have you flown in a flak unit to the 2 bases ? Might help. Can you disperse and covercap from nearby bases ? Better increase Zero production. BTW how are you doing on pulling back resources and oil ? You've captured enough places that you should still be able to pull back enough to avoid the dreaded "supply dip" ... in my most recent game I have been able to avoid it ... maybe better to have him bomb your planes than something else ( resources or HI ! ). In one game I have a zero unit set to replace and just leave it at the base on the ground - it has absorbed a lot of strikes - that otherwise might have done real damage !!!
Also, BTW I read this whole thread from beginning to end today ( and that's saying alot - I usually get sleepy reading AARs ) ... but this one is quite riveting !!! Like a suspense Novel ! Good game - and good AAR ! I especially like your spell checker [;)]

He's able to close every single base with less than 100 fighters. I'm able to keep Mandalay open only because of the "deterrent" ( SP??) of my zeros present there.
And at Daily waters there are no close bases...
Better increase Zero production.
I'm already producing more than 250 zeros each months. I consider these number enough for a normal war...the point is that i didn't think we could get to this point...but i'm really carefull with production. If i overcommitt now on zeros, then i'll pay the price back when it will come to change that production again. I'd like to encrease the production of Tojos and Tonies as soon as they become available...they are defenetly more usefull than zeros!

The flow of resources and oil goes quite well. As soon as RAG operations will be finished i'll move back some escort vessels and will encrease the security of my tankers.
I've already delivered something between 150,000 and 170,000 oil points and i'd say 130,000 resources to Sasebo.
About his bombing...he's attacking me at Mandalay because he wants to force me to retreat from there, so that he will be able to bomb my resources and oil plants. He has already destroyed 230 resources points at Burma....[:(] As long as i hold there my res. at Rangoon and Mandalay are safe...oh well...i hope so

Yup 250 Zeros per month should be enough.

what isn't enough now is the sally and oscar production. I think i'll expand of 20 units the production of the sallies, while i'll leave the oscars as they are now.

Hoepner,
I think you were fortunate in the Indian Ocean, there are plenty of more aggresive players who would be hitting your CVEs with swarms of stringbags and Fulmars right about the time all your torpedos were gone. Your either lucky, or you understand your opponent very well, or he was too slow.
On the subject of night bombing is he bombing from airfields that are within single engine fighter range? If he is why not send them on a 100' altitude sweep and see what they find in the morning?
Very interesting game and a fun read. I'm sure things will slow down eventually but right now its got an action packed fast pace that makes it one of the best AARs going.

RE: The Americal division no longer exists
Hi Tom,
he's bombing Mandalay from Chandupur and Diamond H. They're in range of my zeros for sure, but i know he has 100 and 130 fighters in those two bases...way too much to risk my precious pilots now that the zero bonus has gone.
The ideal would be to strike back with 300 bombers and 100 zeros on escort...but i'll sure lose many many pilots and planes, and i know that the allies always look for an attrition air battle. More, if i move my bombers from China to Burma i'll let him re-open his AFs there, so my whole chinese front would be in danger of a massive campaign of air bombing.
In the IO i've been very cautious. There were 27 mavis and emilies looking for his carriers from Sebang to Broome. My subs with glens were watching every single hex of sea...no way he could pass unseen! I'd really like to see his carriers here: i have 150 nells,on their 80s exp, ready to smash them!
Thanks for the compliments. The pace now will be slowed, cause today i arrived in Sardinia, where i'll stay for 44 days[:D] of a deserved vacation. Here i only have the dial up connection...so not more than 2 turns/day: i have to take care of my sunbaths[8D]

RE: The Americal division no longer exists
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/08/42
The Chinese central front ( Ichang ) is moving again!
He's redeploying his units on the flanks. Tomorrow i'll counterattack in the hex southeast of Ichang where he placed a unit
I got the 60th division today in China. Will be placed as a mobile reserve at Henkov to reinforce the front if needed.
At Chengtu he's moving 130.000 men...against my 11.000....wow! Tomorrow the 135th Ind. Bde/A will be airlifted....let's hope for the best.
Always tomorrow my units will move in the hex north east of Lanchow...so the big river will be passed!!
The usual night bombings. 9 zeros left on the ground today
3 more days and it will be the turn of Nanoumea to capitulate!
I'm slowing reinforcing and garrisoning the Solomons, Bouganville and the whole area of southern DEI ( Timor , Macassar etc.)
Still no sign of his carriers....

Maybe he is hiding his CVs because the psychological damage would be too great if he lost them.

RE: The Americal division no longer exists
why should he risk them. the bases he could have defended are gone, including the land units at these bases. Why go into the derby as a two year old if you can wait until you are five?
Bougainville, November 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. It rained today.

Like all the others I must add that it's a great AAR. I especially like the insight you provide on how you're thinking.
Also very interesting to see that fuel is a limiting factor for you when you mount massive operations like this. I guess that's pretty realistic.
How's your pilot situation? It looks like you have lost quite a number of aircraft and in my limited experience of the Japanese side that could mean that you have problems with pilot experience.
Or have you been able to train the newcomers so that your OK?
