I wouldn't call the end of PT-34 embarrasing nor was the convoy unescorted. On the contrary, the lonely damaged torpedo boat (by zeroes a few weeks before) managed to set one japanese transport on fire with its machine guns before going down from a demolishing hit from the 4.7" gun of an escorting ML.

Other than that.. there are a lot of things I would say if this were an allied only AAR, but sadly for now, all I get to do is comment Pauk's propaganda releases [:D]

Not much to be reported. Two things that occupied my attention are "59 mile bug" and ground combat at Kweyiang. I've ordered my division retreat from blocking position (one hex from the Ichang) - directly to my base, but LCU got stuck (59 mile). What i can do? not a much I afraid.

My para's at Kweyiang did not surender yet. I know that Japanese don't surrender, but it is really wierd to see that 600 men can hold on against three Chinese units....

At last a decent hit from my sub.. but on the whole the sub warfare is just ridiculous, I have sunk almost nothing and lost a bunch of subs, while the japanese have sunk a BC, BB and several smaller ships and lost very few subs .. [:(]

Sometimes, it seems to me that "Murphy's law" is incorporated in the WiTP code. Last turn i've noticed String is massing his bombers at Palembang. I did not switch orders and my Sally's were ordered to attack Singapore airfield. But of course, they did not fly (bad weather) neither String's bombers take off from Palembang AF.

I was wondering what to do this turn, attack Palembang or leave them on Singapore. I've spend 15 minutes and, yes you are guessing right, set them on Palembang. Grrrrr.... my bombers found empty AF, and recon reported app. 200 planes in the Singapore.....

Well, this is nothing compared with this turn. Maybe i have Neptun on my side, but String's have Fortuna goddess on his side. No need to comment this, except that i have similar situations in my game more than ten times (AF operational, targed clouded) and never my planes attacked clouded target. My planes were oredered for offensive mission but...phew! This is one more proof about anti-japanese conspiracy![;)]

Today was another good turn for the allies, I'm sure pauk will fill you in in detail (combat reports) but I'll be hasty and say that Saigon was bombed by my heavy bombers, our subs scored two hits and one of the troop transports at Kendari was torpedoed by a stringbag.

Umph, i lost combat report, but i think String wont protest when he opens new turn[;)]. I'm pretty busy these days and i will leave to String comment this turn. The truth about last encounter is that was my mistake because i did not manoeuvre with TF like i did in previous situations[:(]. Actually, there was not need to stay around Kendari, invasion fleet almost finished unloadig and i should withdraw my TF. But it is really easy to be a general after the battle[;)]...

Ouch!! That was a bad one Pauk! [X(] Very seldom surface ships sink get into a position to hit carriers.
Did he succeed with an intercept outside Kendari? Looks like you were a bit thin on the escort side as well...
A few cruisers in that air tf would have done miracles.

British CL's sink japanese CVL's

Post by String »

Ah yes, that was a very very nice turn indeed, marred only by the ravaging of my victorious battle group at Kendari during the day. Luckily, my cruisers will be okay, atleast for the time being

I had had the taskforce hanging around 5-4 hexes west of Kendari for 2 or 3 days now, and i was hoping that he would leave his invasion fleet uncovered, but that didn't happen. I did note however that his CV TF remained in the same position for 2 days, so i gambled, and won

Image

Ahh yes, the dream of any allied commander

What followed was even better, CL Dragon quickly landed a 6 incher on Zuiho and set her aflame while CL Danae torpedoed CVL Ryujo

Image

Meanwhile my CLAA's proved their worth as destroyer killers, damaging many, while the japanese destroyers launched their torpedoe salvoes that all missed. The british DD's showed their value and damaged many japanese destroyers with gunfire and devastating torpedo attacks. At the same time Dragon and Danae concentrated on the carriers, and Dragon put two fish into Zuiho

Image

The japs tried to fight back, but almost all of their shots missed, only CVL Zuiho, of all ships, managed to land a non penetrating 5" shell on CL Dragon

Image

So ended the battle, with most of japanese escorts sunk and two of their carriers damaged, by the evening our radio operators intercepted a message that confirmed that Zuiho had sunk [:D] It should also be noted that almost every single torpedo attack made by the brits hit their targets. Well done boys!

Image
Image

Heroes of the day, CL Danae (above) and CL Dragon (below)

At the same time, a few hundred miles westwards, at Palembang, an old japanese destroyer, DD Otori, tried to intercept my tankers. She managed to damage one of them quite heavily but the others returned fire and drove the enemy destroyer off with two damaging hits. A DD defeated by Tankers, looks like one japanese captain will be committing suicide quite soon

During the day our bombers from Singapore attacked japanese battleships and cruisers near Sinkawang, the most notable hit was by a blenheim that wiped out a 5" battery on BB Yamashiro. Others didn't do any notable damage.

Our cruiser force however didn't get out fast enough and was intercepted by the japanese covering force at Kendari. The battle was rather lopsided after the british shipshad expended their torpedoes and most of their ammo during the night, and they were at a disadvantage in numbers anyway (2 CL's vs 2 CA's and 2 CL's + escorts). Still, some hits were landed on japanese ships and our CL Dragon managed to close on CA Kako and penetrate it's belt armour with a 6" shell. Regardless, the battle was a clear japanese victory, but I think the CLAA and DD's lost were worth the sinking of a japanese CVL and the damaging of another.

Thanks for replies guys!

Cookie: Although the loss of one CVL is really depressing, i doubt that the importance (on the strategic level) is so significant. But, it is a really depressing.

PzB, you are right. Not that i have not force to strengh my CV force, i was comfortable (lazy, overconfident) and i pay for my idiocy. That's why String have "surface tf fanboy" nsig!, and i can't tell that i wasnt warned.

Anyway, the good thing with that - String spend some time and AAR already looks much better[;)]. Unforutnatly for all Jap fanboys[:'(]

pauk has left it comfortably unsaid, but my forces recaptured Pagan a day or two back. The japs seem to be withdrawing after their initial rush to capture Burma.

This "recapture" is result of strategic redeployment of my mighty forces /which can not lower fort level at the Singapore[8|]. What i'm really interested is actual strengh of the AVG. No great news, except i realized that String gatering forces in Pacific, problably for Tarawa-Marshall islands.

The strength of the AVG is classified, suffice to say that it's finally getting reinforcements [8D] .. On the gatherin of forces in the pacific, well.. let's just say I don't plan losing any islands there.
