Thank you BLurking, it is nice to see that somebody pays attention to this AAR[:)]. I think that you right, but i'm not a expert in Allied OOB.

Not big news today. American SC TF spoted near Darwin disappears few turns ago.... Bombardment TF finish job at Palembang, in cordination with IJ Air Force. Most intersting was B17 air strike from Timor. Does it mean he withdrawing his monsters to the more safe area to regroup them? Most likely, but you never know with String.

TO STRING: I know that we have house rules for night bombing - only one AC group is allowed to do it. However, i forgot does it mean only one ac group for all targets except strategic bombing?

No, O23 isn't a minelayer sub. O19, O20 and Argonaut are.

Yes, only one aircraft group per target except for city bombing.

On the game: I have little else to say that the planning of the eva.. err .. defense of Java and the rest of the DEI is underway. All quiet in the pacific, KB nowhere in sight.. what is he up to?

My search planes detcted a CV in port at Kendari.. hence the air strikes.. seems like there wasn't anything special there, or perhaps my B-17 crews just missed the big box shaped ship in the port thinking it to be a rubbish barge.

This turn was peaceful too. But only at the first sight. Although there wasn't lot's of action, many things happend behind the scene. String again moved aircrafts into Balikpapan but no strike was launched. Well, what will be his next reaction - withdrawing them back to Soerbaya or not?

Air forces continues heavy air raids against Palembang and Manila. Second naval bombardment of Palembang. Heavy loses again.

I lost combat report for 7th february, but IIRC the only big news is capture of Macassar. Recon and naval search already assigned to the base. I surounded Changsha, but expect reaction from String very soon. He will try to deblocade Changsha, that it's for sure. Meanwhile, i ordered attack on the heavily fortified city and my troops suffered enormous casaulties. At least, fort level is reduced.

In the DEI no big news. It seems that String don't want risk with air attack from Balikpapan. He withdrew remains of his air force to the Java. I guess that he started phase II of the "defend" the Java, which means evacuation. But you never know with this Estonian devil. Anyway, i'm well prepared for his counter-attacks and not only in the DEI.

SAA HQ recived report about air attack on my SF TF, CA Chokai is hit, but she has no real damage.

What is pretty clearly, and i don't have to hide this, operation Tjah-go started. Main goal is to capture and secure oil fields at the Palembang.

cleaning the house

Post by pauk »

Imperial HQ decided to clean skies over the Java, and massive air raid over Soerbaya ordered. 120 Zeros sent on the mission, 13 of them failed to return (11 A2A loses, 2 ops loses). But, the main goal is achived, more than 70 enemy fighters shot down. AVG is no more threat, well at least no great threat. String probably trensfered P-40B planes from other groups (PH or somewhere else) and disbanded or withdraw them to AVG. Not a bad plan, in this way he "killed" Zero bonus. But, when you are faced with 120 samurais, nothing helps.

Image

Light surface TF sunk all three remainig PTs at Balikpapan. So, yes, this was a really good turn for me.

Troops unloading at Toboali. Naval search from Kendari and one of small bases (do not remember the name) plus Glens reported lots of ships in the Indian ocean SW of the Java - he evacuating units from Soerbaya, and there is little i can do there at the moment...

When I saw that I though... well wait for 1943! I'll return the favor then! P38's and Corsairs.. but I then realized that we have PDU on which means a LOT of tonies and Tojos. I mean even with without the PDU I have had great success with them in my game vs Andy...

Atleast the zero bonus will die off in a few months

My forces continue to unloading at Jambi. Don't want them disabled from direct landings at Palembang. Other than that, no big news from the DEI. I could mention that CAP over Soerbaja was light today, as I expeced[:D]

China: Changsha is still surounded, but first Chinese LCU came into hex east of Changsha and join my troops there. I'm pretty sure that we will have nasty things there. Interesting attack to the Changsha. Did not bring any reinforcements, but i get 1-1. Banzai!

String again moved his offensive air force (P-40Bs and torpedo bombers) to the Balikpapan, but with no results again. Yes, some zeros are lost (13) but overall score is in my favour, again. I'm well aware that this wont last forever.

Me too can't be pleased with airforce performance. Air raid on Soerbaja ordered but my pilots cordinated bad and result was under expectation.

Recon over Kupang reported lots of ships there and some units, but i can not be sure if he trying to reinforce this place or evacuating from there.

Changsha - more units came into blocked hex (east of Changsha). Enemy fighters spoted on Hengchow AF.

The end

Post by pauk »

Sadly, this flag is going down which means this AAR is finished. My esteemed opponent don't have time for PBEMs at this moment (study obligations).

It was my pleasure and had a lots of fun with String....

That's a pity, I was following your AAR (and your tactic) with interest. [:(]

Good luck for your next game Pauk!

thank you for kind words guys, did not know that someone actually read this forum (well Honda doesn't count because he is my young Padawan - i teach him how to play PBEM (UV) but seems that he is more like Anakin - he kick my ass in the first game[:D])

I learned lot's of things in the game against String. My previous oppoonents have different tactics. I have just only PBEM game with old UV friend and it seems that this game will be totally different than against String (he used extreme Sir Robin so far). But i looking forward into this game too, because i want to know can Japan done better than history if he preserve strengh...

Anyway, String and I exchanged passwords, and I'm gladly announce that my predictions and expectations were close to the truth (maybe this is not big deal for players who plays both sides, but for "one-sided" pauk is pleasing news.

String's strategy was playing "elastic defence", so he actually withdrew to the Soerbaja and started to reinforce Kupang. But, i transfered 3 or 4 divisions from Phi (who needs Manila in 42?) to upcoming invasions on Java. Also, my recons reported strong british fleet (CV, CA's...etc) NE of Australia and SW of Java. Kido Butai was near Kendari, waiting for opportunity (String spoted KB previously, but i sent light Shoho and CS's towards him. Don't know if the trick was succesful). Anyway, after securing Java i would probably go for Darwin - at this moment this base was poorly defended, but some reinforcemets were on their way. Well, it would be interesting[:(]....especially because String well deserve "Estonian devil" title[:)]

Other than that, pools were empty (no B17, Tomahawks, Warhawks), but he had more than 140 British pilots available.... AVG is decimated, although American mercenaires have enough planes (more than 60). Pilots are the problem - few high skilled pilots (80+); 10-15 in the 70s and rest of them below....

I'm considering new game and the AAR in the near future, but i would like to hear what do you guy recomand - separate or joint AAR.

I know benefits of separate AAR - i was forced, as my opponent as well, to keep some staff for myself (sometimes i even lied [:)]) but it consume more time for writing (i'm not sure that i have enough spare time)

on the other hand, joint AAR can offer much more fun (just look at Luskan&Raver AAR) and you are responsibile for your game (no input from other players, no good advices before operations...)

Hm...first of all dad[;)], I have to say my all time favourite is PzB vs Wobs/Dave/Ken. A real bedtime story. Almost a faerie tale. And it spoiled me. I came to expect big challanging operations in big theatres vs. a dedicated opponent with a succesfull outcome. That is something first 3 months of the war usualy fail to produce. SRA is a must and just about keeping your casulties down and timetable neat. Although essential for future ops, nothing spectacular. So then Pauk, tell me, did you have anything big in preparation (India, USSR, China, Australia, agressive Pacific play)?
