played the turn and checked results again....what totallitarian systems never say is the bad news side....he lost nearly 2000 men in china on a fruitless attack at Yenan....

Actually, Xargun did say that. But he doesn't consider it a fruitless attack, since he reduced the fort level to 1. For what my opinion is worth, he's going to take the place soon.

of course, he will have it sooner or later. ( as all jap player did so far )

what annoys me is the loss of a CV and another BB, this worries me becasue of the victory points taken there. I have had never faced such terrifying losses before )

Oh I know how that works!

I have played a fair few PBEM now but rarely as Allies. I am in a game vs Pompack and I have had a bad start and have learnt a lot of lessons as playing Allies now. Within 2 months I have lost 6 x PH BB's + Repulse. All my CV's are fine though and will remain so.

Another day and more allied ships are sunk or crippled !!

My MSWs finished clearing the british mines around Hong Kong - making the harbor safe for my use now. My own MLs are enroute to try to lay some mines to keep allied subs away.

Oli and I had another random surface fight - this one NE from Naura, where the CA Lousville (of Nauru fame) ran into a troop TF of mine. After a brief night time battle, the Louisville limped away burning. The IJN CL Yubari, and DDs Hayate and Oite fought off the American CA allowing the APs to escape any harm at all and saving hundreds of men. The CL Yubari took 9 shells which failed to cause any real harm (I love armor) and the DD Hayate took 2 shells and is a burning wreck. The CA Louisville took 35 shell hits (most, if not all, of which bounced off armor) and took 1 torpedo as well. The CA left the battle burning brightly.

The RAN (I think) CL Adelaide appeared from nowhere at Admiralty Island to disrupt the landing of additional men and equipment. It caught a small TF of 3 APs and 2 PGs there and pounded on them. A total of 11 shells hit within the IJN fleet (1 to each PG and 9 on a single AP), leaving two ships aflame. Weak return fire landed 3 shells on the Adelaide which failed to penetrate her armor.

More IJN MSW encounter and began clearing mines at our newest oil port - Brunei.

9 Zeros swept over the skies at Manilla finding 22 P-40E fighters on CAP. After a brief battle, 4 P-40s were shot down and 1 Zero damaged. A few momnets later another large air raid appeared over Manilla. Apparently I had forgotten to stand down my bombers that hit the port last turn and like troopers they struck again...

27 Zeros escorted 8 Nells and 40 Betties on their raid. All Japanese planes returned home - although many were damaged from flak. The planes encountered no enemy CAP which surprised me. In total 2 AKs, 1 PT, 1 TK, 1 AV and 2 MSWs were hit with a combination of bombs and torpedoes. Also over 150 enemy troops were reported wounded or killed in the raid on the port. As the planes were returning home PT-31 blew apart and AV Langley capsized - two more kills !!

Near Pearl my CVs found some more allied ships. Over 120 IJN bombers located a small fleet of 3 US ships - 2 AVs and 1 AK. All three ships were hit with multiple bombs and torpedoes. As the bombers were returning to their carriers, both AVs exploded and sunk.. The AK was listing badly and burning brightly. Aircraft losses were very light.

Also near Pearl my other CV TF located a TF of US DDs and launched a large raid. Over 80 bombers were escorted on the raid and they found 6 DDs moving around on their own - completely unprotected... Of the 6, 5 ships were hit with bombs, 4 of which took torpedo hits as well. As the planes left all 5 damaged ships were burning, of which 3 sunk. Losses on this raid were higher than the other raid, but I attribute that to the much higher flak power of the warships versus the merchies.

Another raid near Pearl found 1 DD and 1 CA. Only 30 bombers were scrambled on this raid and they managed to hit the CA with 2 bombs - no real damage believed. This TF was close enough to Pearl to draw fighter cover and my zeros shot down 6 P-40s. My losses were light, although a lot of planes were damaged from the heavy flak from the Astoria.

Last turn a small contingent of men stormed ashore at Jesselton and readied for an attack. They attacked today and captured the base against no enemy forces.. Now the allied troops retreating from Brunei have nowhere to run and are effectively cutoff - they can either surrender or starve in the jungle.

IJA troops were ordered to attack again at Yenen. The battle went against the IJA almost from the start. Over 900 IJA men were wounded or kill with reports showing roughly half as many chinese wounded or killed.

===========================================================
INSIGHT

I am still surprised at my success around Pearl. I have sunk or damaged a good number of warships that should hamper the US ASW and fleet operations for several months at least. Now I just have to evacuate my CVs without any lucky US sub captain getting off a shot - or a lucky bomber crashing on the flight decks of one of my ships. My aircraft sent for ASW flights are spotting enemy subs and even making some runs at them - but nothing substantial yet.

The PG Hong Kong Maru which was mauled last turn at Nauru Island by the CA Louisville succumbed to the flooding and sunk today. Most of the crew was rescued. Her sister ship is also heavily damaged and many have doubts if she'll make port as well. Other than that I don't have any ships in danger of sinking. I have several damaged ships, but they will all make port and eventually be repaired and sent back to duty.

My ASW efforts have so far been worthless, although my ASW TFs are finding and attacking enemy ships - nothing has been hit as of yet.

A week into the war and its all going my way so far.

While moving away from Pearl, my CVs launched another strike. This time the target was 3 DDs. Unfortunately this ships were approaching Pearl and had fighter cover. The aerial battle went my way like it should with my fighters downing 10 enemy fighters. The 40 bombers then failed to hit anything with their bombs and torpedoes. My bomber crews are worn out and tired and I assume this is why they missed.

At Yenen an IJA artillery bombardment claimed over 120 chinese troops.

More men came ashore in Borneo yesterday and today captured Sandakan unopposed. Now the entire North - NorthEast portions of Borneo are under my control - giving me safe runs to and from Borneo.

US DD Patterson was reported spotted sinking near Pearl Harbor today - after its abuse at the hands of IJN bombers yesterday.

Other than that this was a slow turn...

I love slow turns. Too bad about Louisville, I sent here to Makin for refuel and re-arm ( see rules above ), evil Xargun sent in another Invasion force there...Louisvill was without 8" Ammo fighting there ! Too bad I missed the chance to bring BIG holes into these tiny little jap cruisers. Now I face a torpedo hit....I think she will survive as the fires are out now.

here is one jap sub with recon planes in the area between LA and PH - I have to find this sucker. I will find it sooner or later but it takes time....

Xargun lost already lots of top pilots - traded for good stuff on the allied side - was it worth it ? the future will tell. I have 2 major operations going on but I cant reveal any details yet. I will inform you when one of these is completed. Operation #1 is named PLASTIC FLOWER and is in good progress and is ahead of shedule and Xargun didnt even notice that. Operation #2 is labled RED VULTURE and is in progress too with good success too.

Jap ASW efforts are laughable since the game has started. I hope this will be all the time the case [:D]

CA Louisvile will make it safe to harbor despite the fact that she eat a torpedo.
This day no airstrike at PH ! He must be out of ordnance now.
operations still running fine. got a few contacts with my subs but since we are on allied sub doc ON, they are always diving away....japs asw efforts didnt found my subs so far.

India : All quiet

OZ : All quiet

South Pacific : We are fighting in the Rabaul Admirality area. He has brought in reinforcemts ( 4 CA's ). I putted an 250 lb bomb on a PG causing some fires.
CA Louisville is heading for a port for draing the flooding

PH : I lost track of one of his CV' TF's I cant say if its good news or bad news.

PI : nothing to report, only a few sightings here and there.

DEI : all quiet expect Borneo where I have only Balikapan and the base NW of the Island left as major bases

WC : some anti-sub ops makeing slow progress.

Alaska : all quiet.

another turn of the evil empire of japan was sent ;-) tonight and here is an update :

For the first time one of my subs was shooting 4 Torps Mk14 against a PG in an ASW TF but the torps missed again. as usual, japanese ASW was fruitless.

120 Miles east of Batavia I found I-162 and I dropped 3 DC's on her I hope she will sink soon.

I found another sub 300 miles east of Soerabaja and the dutch asw TF dropped one DC on it. damage unknown.

I shot down 9 Ki-30 Anns and one Val over Manila and the entire flottilla of 30 Anns fled away ! Only the remaining Vals dived into attack doing no damage . Escorting Zeros shot down only 1 P40. I call this my first air battle victory.

I still see part of KB west of PH. I assume they are heading for Kwajalein for rearming etc. I assume they are back in short time.

Operation PLASTIC FLOWER is in full progress and will be complete in 4 weeks. Amazing progress.

Operation RED VULTURE runs fine too but it may turn out to be a failure - not sure yet.

At the Rabaul/Admirality Island : The 4 CA's there worry me. And he has completed an Airfield there which will casue even more worries.

CA Louisville is only 240 miles away from port and the level of flooding is decreasing despite the fact that she is on flank speed. She will live to fight again.

Xargun mate, drop some lines here mate, the readers demand imperialistic input [:D]

Another slow day in the war...

My ASW asses are great at locating allied subs, but are horrible in executing actual attacks. I have like 5 subs located and have not made one actual attack yet [:@] kinda frustrating especially since my last game with Rob I was sinking subs at a good rate.

A TF consisting of 4 CAs and escorts bombarded Rabaul in the night. They raced in hit the base and left. Reports claim around 150 allied casualties and a few hits on the airfield.

A pair of Hudsons from Rabaul retaliated come dawn and landed a bomb on an IJN PG. The ship is listing heavily to port, but should make safe port.

A bunch of artillery bombardments in China and Alor Star report more allied casualties. IJA troops lands at Tawi Tawi and captured the undefended base.

Another slow day [:(]

More IJN ASW TFs locate enemy subs and still no attacks - I must have attacked 10 allied subs at least by now and not a single DC dropped...

Damn allied ASW is still going strong with 5 Dutchs DDs scoring against RO-34. The damage is minor but the sub is still heading for port to be safe.

IJN SS I-162 put a torpedo into the allied TK Anastasia near Palmebang. The TK was heading towards the giant oil base when attacked.

More artillery barrages in China claim more chinese casualties. A strange event happened near Homan. The bulk of my men are 1 hex away from Homan on the rail trading artillery shells with 3-5 chinese units.... all of a sudden one of my units appears at Homan... Not only did they jump through the barricade but then they conducted a Shock attack [X(] Of course they got mauled against 3:1 odds. Over 1500 IJA troops were wounded or killed in this bizarre incident.

An attack at Alor Star lowers the defensive works around the base to level 3. The battle was almost won, but the IJA troops just couldn't get anymore support (got 3:1 odds - not quite enough).

Men of the 1st Parachute Regiment arrived in Aparri and secure the large airbase against no enemy troops.

IJN PG Yachiyo succumbed to the watery death of the Pacific Ocean as it was limping back to port. The PG Yachiyo was mauled at Nauru island by a US Cruiser.

More failed IJN ASW efforts.. This is really starting to upset me.. I have 6 enemy subs located - 5 of which have ASW TFs on top of them.. and yet no weapons are fired at them.. I get the attack sequence but nothing is even fired at them.....[:@] Although the allied ASW efforts proceed at full speed with 7 RN DDs locating and blowing the heck out of I-162. The sub quickly sunk from combined hits from multiple depth Charges.

Float planes flying from the waters around Admiralty Island located a small TF near PNG... They radioed in their report and 11 Nells from Truk were launched. The Nells located the TF and identified 3 allied CLs - either RAN or RN ships [I don't remember who belongs to who]. The Nells made their attack runs. the CL Adelaide was struck with 1 torpedo, while CL Leander was hit by 3. A single Nell failed to return from the raid. The Adelaide will probably make port, but I doubt the Leander will.

Another attack at Alor Star leaves 800 IJA troops dead or wounded, with less than 100 enemy troops lost. The only good thing was that the fortifications at Alor Star took a beating and are down to level 2 now. A couple days of rest and the base should fall.

Victoria Point was captured without combat, as an entire IJA Tank Regiment rolled through the base.

SPecial Light Forces from the Navy landed at Morotai and captured the base against no opposition. This invasioin is probably the beginning of the drive for Amboina and Kendari.

==============================================================
INSIGHT

Well other than the screw up in china costing me 1500 men I am doing well all over the place. I had hoped Alor Star would have fallen by now, but oh well.. A few extra days won't make much difference.

My Nells catching those CLs about 300 miles SW of Admiralty Island was nice. I'm guessing they were on there way to raid the island and would have caught a nice plump merchie target there - lightly defended. But with 1 CL crippled and another damaged, I'd be surprised if he continues on.

Operation Artic Hammer has been given approval. It will take roughly 10 days to get all assets in place for the operation. Then another 10 to actually fullfil it.

This lack of ASW effectiveness is really driving me nuts. I have resources/oil I will soon be needing to haul and I can't even damage the enemy subs who will be the only enemy forces capable of hindering this. Not sure if I need more ships, better leaders, better experience or all 3.. But I need to do something soon.

greetings...

I'm interested about your ASW composition, where (deep water or shallow) your ASW tried to attack subs?

I'm sure that you know it, but just in a case:[;)]

1. put agressive leader into ASW force
1a.... if you don't want to spend PP for agressive leader, just add DD to your ASW... (i usually using one DD and 5-6 PC or PGs for one ASW fleet)

2. I have very good experience with APD's in sub killer role, once they pass 50 exp, they become deadly[:D]. Even before that APD's can attack and sink enemy sub. So one DD and several APDs could be your elite ASW force like mine:)....

we are at 23 Dec. now and Xargun has captured "alor star" or "alor setar" or
"alor am arsch" - what ever. troop losses are thin in the area.

in china, he bombed my resource in chunking, hitting 2 of them.

at the West Cost I see subs but my ASW units are far away.

east of PH he torpedoed CA Chicago with 2 torps and the flood level is bad.

I have encountered a transport TF at shortland - he had two transports, 2 or 3 DD's and CA Kinugasa. I had CA Canberra , 1CL, 3 DD's. guess who won ?

yes ME ! CA Kinugasa decided to run away, the aussies chasing them. Canberra landed salvo afther salvo at his CA and his transport so did the Le Trioumphant and the CL. I counted 1 Torp hit at kinugasa and several serve damage hit with mostly 6" ammo. very nice !

long live tha aussie navy - I assume the have never heard of the long lance. I face a slight damaged CL - good exchange in materiel.

a bad day for the japs

Xargun lost another Sub near L.A. :) SS I-25 eat 6 DC's and that was the end for her.

CA Kinugasa went to the bottom of the sea - where she belongs btw. just NE of Shortlands.

Another 2 AP's went down too.

I say merry x-mas to the japs and if Xargun continues to have this losses at this rate, he is sooner in trouble then you could say 'Yamamoto'. [:D]

greetings...

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply... I have restructured my ASW efforts over the last week of the game with some better performances - actually dropping some charges and getting some hits now. I have reoroganized my TFs and spent some of my dwindling PPs to assign aggressive leaders to them. Seems to be working..

As before I am mostly attacking his subs in the deep ocean - he has yet to bring many into the shallows..

Operation PLASTIC FLOWER is a failure - Xargun spotted my tankers at palembang. the goal was to withdraw 100.000 points of oil from palembang. he sank two TK's there and another one is badly mauled up - thanks to his Kates from a baby KB. My CAP there sucked big time. I had withdrawn about 30000 points of oil - better then nothing. I just hope that the C4 charges planted on the oil fields will work and go off when he jumps into palembang.

I have lost track of his subs and in reverse he got more and more spots and hits on my subs.

CL Mauritius was victim of the Singapore raid. She got 90 sys damage and I tried to withdraw her from singapore while the weather was bad. unfortunatly, with 1-2 knots of speed there was just not enough room between her and the jap air base. She took about 100 bomb hits from small boms and she is still afloat but the damage is bad and I have lost all hope that she will make it to port.

Operation RED VULTURE is still underway and is working properly. more news on this later - good news.

some of the Pearl Harbour victims are now in ports on the west coast undergoing repairs.
