Was it as easy to detect russian subs in RL as in Dangerous Waters? How well the whole thing is modelled compared to RL?

I've never played Dangerous Waters but I played the early versions of Harpoon PC including the miniatures version. I've haven't seen a modern day computer wargame accurately model ASW yet. Harpoon tried but unless you can accurately model the intricacies of sound physics in the oceans, you'll never have a game that accurately depicts the problems associated with detecting and tracking diesel and nuclear subs.

The only Russian boat that gave me fits was the Kilo. Some nucs were harder than others but a Kilo operating in the Mediteranean or the Sea of Japan is a bigger tactical threat than any nuc boat. Its real tough to detect a it running on battery when its surrounded by merchants and fishing boats, especially if you are covert and can't use active sonar. The nuc is fast and has lots of weapons but when silence is needed, the Kilo wins hands down.

it is a fairly serious sim, as everything from Sonalyst. you can try a demo.

in full version they have LA Improved class, Seawolf, Akula (Bars), Akula II, and two or three types of Kilos, Orion, Sea Hawk and OH Perry. AI is OK. but the real kick is play over the net.

I do know theres a french translation out, but only in france, so I'd have to order it all the way from there...

"Japanese fighter jets have been scrambled 30 times to turn away Chinese planes approaching Japan's airspace in the last six months, more than twice the 13 times in the same period last year, officials have said."

Well, this can mean one of two things:
Either the Chinese military is intentionally ratcheting up things to test Japan's air defenses

or

their aviation navigation skills have degraded immensely in the last 6 months and their planes keep getting lost until Japanese fighters shows up to "point them in the right direction"....

There's actually a really good History Channel program on the Japanese Navy from WW2 to today. (KAIGUN) I believe is the name of the program.

Any rate, it details how things went there, but it especially talks about how the JDF has actually become one of the best trained and equipped navy's in the world. Second only to ours of course! [8D]

Still, well worth watching if you've not seen it.

Well reviving this little topic just because I discovered that a veteran seawolf ChezDaJez still didn't have a glance at Dangerous Waters, maybe because he actually thinks it is the same kind of game as Harpoon [:)]

Not quite accurate but close enough. The ESM screen isn't even close though. Interesting MADMAN display. Wish I could go more indepth about what's missing or inaccurate here but I can't. Still, it's close enough for a game.

One thing I see missing on those LOFAR displays are the 30,000 fishing boat signatures [:D].

But as you say, we have to keep it mind that DW, though being hardcore for a civilian player, is still a midcore game when it comes to reality - Sonalysts are under contract with the Navy and make sims for them, I am sure they have everything they need for a more accurate simulation, but Dangerous Waters take two important points into account that the Navy products don't care about: gameplay and some official instructions about what can be done and what can't [:D]

It has a radar "bulge" underneath the fuselage, I think it is a surface scan radar of somekind [&:][&:][&:]

The Japanese Air Force uses the U-125 in mixed units with rescue choppers. The plane is manufactured by Raytheon, mainly for maritime patrol (and theorically sea rescue is this case) purpose.

Our goverment in Aussie land is so cheap we use them all the time for mock air attacks on the navy -long term leasing
