Dateline Pearl Harbor:

Battlecruiser Squadron 1 encountered 3 Jap destroyers at Kwajelein. 1 Destroyer was sunk, 1 damaged. The squadron withdrew without finding better prey.

Jap forces in strength are moving on Jehol. A major battle could be forming just east of the city.

FINALLY a Jap sub hit a mine! Hope the little B@stard sinks.

SPECIAL REPORT:

Through various sources we have compiled the statistics on ship losses to date. Of course the Japanese data is somewhat suspect but should generally be accurate.

Jap Losses:

2 AK
9 AP
1 CL
15 DD

US Losses:

2 AK
4 CL (Chinese cruisers)
13 DD
15 MSW - mostly to subs during ASW operations
14 PG
4 SS - 3 out of 4 lost due to air action
4 TK - destroyed during the bombardment of Midway

As the reader can see so far the Japanese Navy has had a decided advantage in all phases of the war. In addition to these losses several heavy units from both sides have been damaged by sub and air launched torpedoes. We have no data on their current state of repair.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

A small Jap invasion TF slipped into and landed on the island of Palmyra today. Their attack was thrown back by the US Army forces garrisoning the island. There is an inquiry into the timing of the invasion. The US Navy's DESRON 41 had departed the island 2 days prior to the landing headed for Mare Island and ASW upgrades. Is this luck? Or treason by someone in the War Dept?

Yet again the Navy is caught napping. We are 7 weeks into the war. How can these forces continue to move without us knowing about it? Every move by the Japanese has seemingly been a surprise to the Navy despite years of planning and war gaming various situations. When is someone competent going to take over?

Chinese forces continue their retreat to Jehol. The supply situation in Jehol is not good and the Chinese are having real problems stockpiling supplies to support their army in the field.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

Due to a communication error the cargo ship Susan Luckenbach proceeded into Palmyra without ever being told there were hostile ships in the area. She was destroyed by Jap destroyers, there were 2 survivors.

DESRON 41 rushed back to Palmyra too late to save the Susan Luckenbach, but it will remain on patrol until DESRON 54 relieves them. A careful search of the island indicates that the Japanese withdrew their landing force in the night.

In other news there was a battle between Chinese and Japanese forces 60 miles east of Jehol. The Chinese forces were forced to retreat back to Jehol.

Intelligence continues to indicate a massive Jap build up at Marcus and Wake Islands. Jap cargo vessels have been spotted and Filippino guerillas indicate that some Jap forces are being redeployed from Luzon.

Meanwhile the Philippino Reserve Division exchanged artillery fire with the Jap 6th Division. The Philippino Reserve Division is the only significant force left in the Philippines. Unfortunately the division is cut-off from any bases or supply.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The British announced today that their convoy HK-110 on it's return trip from Hong Kong came under attack by Jap subs. The escorting destroyers were able to drive off the subs before it could attack the cargo ships. This incident has heightened tensions with the Japanese Empire. The British are considering whether they should strengthen their garrison on Borneo.

US destroyers apparently heavily damaged a Jap sub operating in the vicinity of Midway.

Chinese Warlord Wei-Jen Peng bombarded a Jap armored car regiment that had crossed the border from Manchuria into China proper.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

For several weeks the Japanese subs have not menaced either Pearl Harbor or Midway in significant numbers. Their return along with intel reports indicates that the major fleet action and invasion of Pearl Harbor and Midway can not be far away. Civilians have been fleeing Hawaii in unprecedented numbers and many businesses have closed up. Almost daily, additional troops and supplies arrive in Hawaii, but the question is will it be enough. The primary defense rests with the Battlefleet.

For several weeks now the US and England have been in negotiations about the protection of the Atlantic Ocean. The US goal is to have England take over some patrolling responsibilities in the Atlantic, allowing the US to transfer major elements of the Atlantic Fleet to the Pacific. Rumors are that there will soon be an agreement.

Warlord Peng's attack against the Japanese transgressors in China forced the armored car regiment to withdraw. But the attack was so poorly conceived and executed that it was only the massive number of Chinese troops that won the day. Several hundred Chinese were said to have been killed or wounded, while the Japanese escaped without loss.

A major battle for Jehol is starting as Japanese troops have entered the outskirts of the city.

Special Report: Situation in the Pacific 25 July 1926

Post by Mike Carroll »

Attached is a map showing the general situation in the Pacific as of 25 July 1926.

Basically the Japanese are mopping up the last resistance in the PI and building up the Army and Naval forces for a push on Midway and Pearl Harbor.

US Battlecruisers have raided into the Marshal Islands with mixed results.

The Japs successfully captured Baker Island.

The Japs landed on Canton Island, but have been unsuccessful in capturing the island.

The Jap landing at Palmyra was unsuccessful and they withdrew their troops.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The Japanese at Jehol launched a full scale attack on the Chinese defenses and were thrown back with heavy losses.

Small units of the Japanese army and navy continue their mop-up operations in the Philippines.

Submarine R-9 reports sinking the Jap Destroyer Yamakaze near Wake Island. The destroyer is reportedly part of a large group of surface warships moving on Wake.

Jap subs have returned to the vicinity of Midway and Pearl Harbor with a vengeance. Fortunately their shooting has not been very good. Must be their thick glasses.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

Guerilla forces on Mindanao throw back a major Jap Assault inflicting heavy casualties.

The US Government announces a call for an additional 100,000 recruits for the Army, 20,000 for the Marine Corps and 25,000 Navy. A government spokesman stated that "In light of the huge number of troops the Japanese are massing for the assault on Midway and Pearl Harbor we are having to rethink our whole warplan. It is thought that the campaign will have to expand into the Marshal Islands to support an eventual return to the Philippines."

In other news the USS McCawley torpedoed by a Jap Sub on July 8 has been in a life and death struggle to stay afloat. The destroyer has almost sunk 3 times since arriving in Pearl. They are seemingly have problems controlling the flooding. Just when they think they have it under control things go the other way. (This destroyer arrived at Pearl with floatation of 84. It has been going between 95 and 70 since twice rising above 90 after going as low as 70).

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

In the first US carrier attack, planes from the carrier Langley attacked Jap battleships at anchor near Marcus Island. Unfortunately US forces did not make any hits. US pilots are still too green to effectively attack warships. However, no planes were lost and the attack confirmed the presence of the bulk of the Jap Battlefleet.

Guerillas in the Philippines continue to withstand Jap attacks inflicting heavy casualties.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

Yesterday Jap naval forces bombarded Kiska Island. This outrageous attack on US soil has caused a political backlash for the US Military. The attack on this seemingly remote outpost has raised war hysteria to a new level. The Governor of California has mobilized the National Guard to patrol California coasts. He has also let it be know that he will resist the deployment of California National Guard troops outside of California for the forseable future.

Chinese and Jap forces seemed to have settled into a statemate at Jehol. The US 15th Infantry has joined the Chinese defenders. The French Tientsien garrison has refused to leave their barracks. Chinese authorities are in negotiation with some the various warlords to see if additional forces can be gathered. At the moment Chinese and American forces at Jehol are outnumbered at least 2 to 1.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

MAJOR BATTLE AT TAYTAY. ASIATIC FLEET SUFFERS HEAVY LOSSES!!!!

A major naval action occured last night near Taytay in the Philippines. Admiral Carpender received intel that a Jap landing was occuring. His fleet was patrolling in the Sulu Sea; attempting to intercept Jap troop transports. His intel indicated that the landing at TayTay was lightly escorted. Unfortunately when they arrived they discovered Jap battleships and armored cruisers. A fierce engagement ensued. The outgunned and outnumbered US and French forces fought bravely but ultimately were forced to retire with heavy losses. During the course of the battle 2 US and 2 Jap destroyers were sunk. The heavily damaged USS Huron sank later in the night south of TayTay. Another French cruiser was heavily damaged and may not make port. Admiral Carpender had to transfer his flag to the French Armored cruiser Waldeck-Rousseau. Two Jap Battleships were torpedoed but it is unlikely they were heavily damaged.

Jap troops also landed on Kiska Island after heavily bombarding the defenders. This is the first foreign invasion of US soil since the war of 1812. Congress is calling for an immediate counter-attack to recapture Kiska and a major shift of naval units to protect Alaska.

In a major organizational move the US military has adopted a General Staff system similar to the one used by the German Army prior to the Great War. Hero of the Great War Douglas MacArthur has been appointed Chief of Staff and will have overall responsibility for the coordination of the war against Japan. The first move of General MacArthur was to appoint Admiral Anderson as the commander of the newly re-constituted Asiatic Fleet HQ at Mare Island. Admiral Anderson is charged with the planning and eventual command of the invasion and recapture of the Philippines.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The USS Wasmuth was sunk by a Jap sub southeast of Midway. The Wasmuth had struck a mine at Midway and we returning to Pearl for repairs.

The fallout of the naval battle near Taytay continues. Apparently the French government is having second thoughts about their role in the war and may look to conclude a seperate peace with the Japanese. This could have disasterous consequences for the Asiatic Fleet. Not only would this move remove the only Armored Cruisers the fleet has, it would close French bases in IndoChina and SouthPac. We will keep you updated on this situation.

The battle for Kiska has begun. This remote outpost of the US is lightly defended and reinforcements will be a long time coming. Apparently the outpost has a good stockpile of supply but there are very few Marines present. The majority of forces are rear area types and engineers.

The defenders will have some incentive to hold out if any of the rumors of atrocities committed by the Japanese in the Philippines are true. Stories from local guerillas indicate that the many US service men have been executed and are being starved in death camps around Luzon. The US have made a formal protest and requested that the Red Cross examine the living conditions of the prisoners. Apparently the treatment of the Philippino prisoners is even worse.
