Overall, I was fighting for territory right up until the Blizzard struck and made no special preparations.
Here are the stats at the beginning and end of the Blizzard:

Note that most of the losses are disabled; ie. ~ 1,500,000. They will be returned:

To be quite frank, what happened during the blizzard was pretty much what I thought would occur based on history... at least vs the AI.

I think 'vs the AI' is key. The AI is fairly timid on the attack and doesn't seem to really operate with a plan for unhinging you. It doesn't have a sense of the opportunity the blizzard rules give it and it doesn't plan to mount a coherent offensive as soon as the blizzard hits.
A good soviet player will not lose 4.3 million permanent losses against a good Axis player, or even close. But (if the AARs are any indication), they will can cause historic or better losses.

You don't need to Lvov against the AI, but you better against a Human.

Against a human Russian in pbem you will be crushed in that first blizzard, no matter what you do previously to prepare. There is absolutely nothing you can do about it except run and that is not historical at all.
