Just how many hits does it take??

Post by Flat Top Junkie »

Hi all,

First off, from a long time Flat Top addict, the game looks and plays just great and we're looking forward to copies of UV arriving in the UK so we can play trans-atlantic UV PBEM!!

Now the bad news... a couple of things are spoiling my initial enjoyment of the game... ok... maybe these have been raised a million & one times, so be patient with us UV newbies...

Firstly, the AI seems to keep IJN transports afloat just long enough for them to unload all their troops ashore. Playing the 1st scenario, Coral Sea, the IJN go for Gili-Gili.... no surprises there, but when I have 5 subs and repeated multi formation air strikes causing 4,5,6 hits per AP per turn I expect them to go down. However, they linger until they've unloaded their 7,000 plus troops before even thinking about sinking. I tallied 14 1000, 500 & 250lb bomb hits on a single AP many causing 'critical damage', without it sinking... so guys... what gives?

Note this doesnt seem to apply to Allied transports. 2 or 3 hits and its off to Davey Jones' Locker for them.

Secondly... is there a Victory Points screen, you know a 'you've destroyed this, killed that and sunk that' screen. If there is then it must be hiding. If there isnt, wouldnt it be a nice addition?

Keep up the great work, luv the game :D

Welcome.

Are you playing with FOW on? If so, a lot of your hits could be just over-enthusiastic pilits thinking they hit the ship. In any case, sinking is usually not instantaneous- a lot of troops can go over the side before the ship goes down. Allied ships have better damage control, so they tend to be more resistant to flooding especially. Also, you wouldn't know if all the tropps got off since your intel on them is not that precise.

On you second question- have you looked at the intel screen on the toolbar? It has all those statistics.

Or hit the hotkey "I" to get to the intel screen. I check that screen every day; it's more reliable than the combat animation.

Well, fog of war maybe one thing, but when you plaster a bunch of anchored, unloading transports packed with troops, guns and ammunition then one hit is often good enough to cause catastrophic casualties. Secondary explosions from ammunition is often enough to either gut the ship completely or sink it.

Case in point is the Sir Galahad, bombed during the Falklands Campaign whilst at anchor awaiting to unload troops. One bomb......

I would have to say that the routines that determine damage dont 'seem' to take into account the loading of the vessel. i.e. An oiler hit by a bomb should go up in a cloud of unsmoke!

I would have included my combat reports in detail, number of hits and stuff, but last nights 'True Upgrade' made my save games unaccessable... grrrrrr
