Invade-able hexes and some alignment & DOW questions

Post by jjdenver »

I've been told that Athens and Patrai in Greece are invade-able and that shore bombardment can reach them. My reading of the rules doesn't show this. Can someone help me understand why or if they can be invaded and bombarded?

Here is the pertinent rule I think:
"Invasions allow your land units to attack enemy held coastal hexes that touch upon a sea area to which you have transported the land units. You may only invade an enemy controlled coastal hex that has at least 1 all-sea hexside (at least part, but not necessarily all, of this coastal hexside must touch upon the sea area where the TRS is located)"

I've attached a pic of Greece. I don't see any all sea hexsides in th Athens hex nor the Patrai hex that touch the sea areas of It Coast or E Med.

Separate Q: can GE align Bulgaria on the same impulse that it DOW's Greece?
another Q: I've been told that when DOW'ing a minor as GE/IT, only 1 of the 2 should DOW otherwise it's 2 USE rolls. This would only allow 1 of them to get surprise effects (double air etc). So for example if attacking Yugo, only GE should DOW not GE + IT. Is this how it works in MWIF?

Not an all-sea hex, but hex-side. Athens has 3. Patras 3 too. The clear blue areas are part of the sea where the darker blue is, I believe Patras to the Italian Coast, and Athens to Eastern Mediterranean.

The limits of the seas are the lines like the one between Patras and Kalamai, and the clear blue areas are also part of those seas.

2- I am not sure about the dow + align.

3 - you need to see the US entry actions chart, at least in some cases (don't remember if in all) every DOW gets one roll. That's why many times it's the AXIS who declares war together.

Hexsides are the edit:edges* of the hex. A hexside that is uninterrupted by the depiction of landmass is an all-sea hexside, e.g. NE E and SE of Athens. For shore bombardment you only need a coastal hex, that is any hex that has some depiction of sea in it.

In the DoW step there is a order for things to happen. Breaking neutrality packts, DoWs vs MP, DoWs vs minors, alignments, special stuff (maybe some other steps in there, read it up in chapter 9).
It short, you can DoW and then align if the DoW is conditional on the war (like aligning the Fins when you start Barb).

Yes, IT DoW Yugo and GE DoW Yugo are two USE rolls. All entries in the USE actions chart are single instances unless specifically mentioned (like "Germany or Italy or both ...").

* not a native speaker should be edges not vertices!

About Bulgaria - it depends what happens with Bessarabia. But if the right conditions are met for Bulgaria to be aligned then Germany could DoW Greece and then align Bulgaria since DoWs are before alignments in the sequence of play.

I might add that the US getting a chit is 30% for a DOW on most minor countries (such as Greece and Yugoslavia). Aligning a minor is also 30%. If you have both Italy and Germany DOW Yugoslavia, that would be two 30% die rolls.

I think of alignment and DOW on minors as being of equal risk for USE. One benefit of alignment (say for Hungary) is that blue factories in an aligned minor function (produce BPs) for the controlling major power.

So is Algiers a hex that can be shore-bombarded? I think no?

Yes, Algiers may be shore-bombarded. But not invaded. If you hover with the mouse on the hex you get the information if the hex is invadable, or not. Likewise, it is shown what sea area is adjacent to the hex and the hex can receive shore bombardment from those sea areas. See picture below.

There is a depiction of sea in the hex (north-north-west part), that makes it a coastal hex. Coastal hexes allow be shore bombardment, de-/embarkment and oversea supply.
