Anyway, the manual says that for each stand a unit has it gets a chance to damage its opponent, the number of times are dependent on the unit size.

Sorry for any confusion. Basically, to make offense balance, units will get approximately the same number of die rolls (except for legions.) So, a single standed unit (e.g., catapult) will get 4 die rolls for each stand. A two standed unit (e.g., cav.) will get 2 die rolls for each stand. (So, when 1 is dead, he will get 2 die rolls.) A four stand unit (e.g., normal infantry) get 1 die roll for each stand. (So, when 1 is dead, he will get 3 die rolls.) Legions get 1 die roll per stand, so they get the potential of 6 die rolls -- making them quite lethal. (When 1 is legion stand is dead, he will get 5 die rolls.)
