Have you uninstalled and reinstalled? I would do that - uninstall, delete everything and start from scratch.

I think defensive stance allows you more opportunity fire. Or so I've noticed.

bought my core units for a german campaign starting in 39, but it seems like so many darn units to push around on a winter night. What do folks find to be a good medium size number of points? Am I correct in assuming that the AI chooses points accordingly?

The nice thing about the Campaign series is the huge amount of scenarios especially if you get EIF. The scripted campaigns can be quite good too.
