It almost didn't happen

"a day that will live in infamy" must be one of the most remembered phrases ever. The irony is, this wasn't in the original version of FDR's speech. His first typed draft read "a day that will live in world history". He hand wrote the change for the final version.

<t>Good suggestion.<br/>

Also, how about additional penalties when units from different navies are working together. From Java Sea on this always caused difficulties. One of the many problems at Savo Island was that while the allies were at (from memory) readiness condition two, this meant ...

<t>Let me add my voice to the general tone of the replies here. I've also spent a non-trivial part of the last decade playing GG games, and am glad of the experience. IMHO the interaction of Matrix staff here is outstanding, and I cannot recall an issue where the response hasn't been either to ...

Savo Island: Myths and Truths

<t>A number of myths have grown up about how the allies missed the approach of the Japanese to Savo Island. In many ways the litany of missed signs is like a mini-Pearl Harbour, or the current debate about 9/11. Please bear with me & I’ll try to summarise what I think is the accurate story.<br/>

<t>Thanks. One question, are upgrades automatic or can we elect to stay with the earlier aircraft? [still waiting for my game to arrive in this far flung corner of the world]. In particular, I'm sure I'll gain eternal gratitude from my fliers by retaining the SBD rather than "upgrading" to ...

A Bit of Trivia

<t>A bit of trivia, it is a historical fact that most sea battles have been fought reasonably close to land. To this day the battle held farest out to sea remains that between British and French sailing ships on 1 June 1794 ("the Glorious First of June"), around 400 miles from the nearest land.<br ...

I'll second the recommendation for the book by Harold Buell. Found it in the Library, and have just bought it second hand from Amazon for $9 (theres plenty left). As well as his unique combat experience, the author also has a PhD in history - quite a combination.

<t>If you're after a concise one volume read I'd recommend Edwin P. Hoyt's "The Glory of the Solomons". There are copious volumes on Guadacanal from Aug 42-Feb 43. This book starts as the Japanese evacuate Guadacanal and covers the rest of the Solomons through 1943, ending in early '44 with the ...

<t>I'll echo the comments of Ed and Paul G. here. Seems to me the strength of Pacwar is that it has a good blend of historical accuracy versus letting you run the war the way you want it. This is because the balance of factors is pretty much right, sea vs air power, the potency of CV TF's, logistics ...

<t>Thanks for the URL, babyseal7. The tail end of the section on the Marianas campaign says that 371 B29s were lost from 25,500 sorties. Thats one per 68 flights, or under 1 aircraft lost per attack from a squadron of 50, as typically used in the game. My pacwar experience has been much higher than ...
