76mm - your problem is much easier solved by simply not feeling the compusive need to patch. just finish outstanding games with the version of the game it started under. this is much preferable to having 2x3 orphan the game development.

tiny objects that might be lying on the ground etc just simply get clipped out instead of using LOD ...

you can drive right through the tree. it is more a planned graphical glitch. we don't bother trying to drive around the billboard trees to save the poor pathfinder some CPU

you should have an autosave at the end of every turn so the last autosave should get you back to the very end of the game.

yes, you must color code the underlying 2d terrain map. that is what pathfinding uses to determine a path.

also, i recommend leaving a decent size gap or you will get the pathfinder getting things stuck. tight and narrow paths will drive the pathfinding algorithim crazy.
