I know you didn´t touch AA guns, that´s why I said it´s more dangerous for Allied bombers to bomb at 15.000 ft than bombing at 5.000 ft. The reason is that the 75 mm and 105 mm AA guns only shoot at targets over IIRC 5-7000 ft. [8|] So the Allied standard bombing altitude of 6000 ft is the perfect one. No morale hit, the small AA guns not really effective (there are just a couple of 13mm and 25 mm guns) and the real flak guns don´t shoot at all.

Ahh, I misunderstood the original complaint - I thought you were saying stock WitP handled the flack better than the mod - my mistake, I'm awake now!

Something to ponder for 1.4

I have to correct myself, those Dutch torp bombers have a torp range of 4 not the 3 I mentioned.

Allied ground losses:

Guns lost 1

Port hits 3
Port supply hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 12000 feet

as I decided not to send any more TFs to Soerabaja I started with a port attack as there are 24 reported ships. The airfield will follow soon to make it impossible to bring back the B17s. Flak is intense (except one A2A loss, all Sallies are shot down or damaged by the flak there - early war Dutch flak is surprisingly better than Japanese flak will ever get through the whole war) and with all Dutch troops there I doubt I will be able to close it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

BB Nagato surprisingly didn´t sink this turn as it´s floatation damage stayed at 94, it´s now 1 hex south of Batavia. Though there´s no hope for the ship as a survival would be more than a wonder. I would give the ship a 0,05 % chance to survive. Probably it will sink in the night phase of the next turn...

So to the "flaw" of nothing happening at Soerabaja and the movement of one hex less that started the disaster also comes dumbness on my side as I thought I would be out of torp range this turn and decided not to LRCAP the ship. So I took the ship it´s chance to survive. The surprisingly effective Dutch pilots achieve the greatest Allied victory so far in the game.

The "good" thing about the sure loss of Nagato [8|] is the fact that Helpless now seems motivated again, as I already wanted to end the game as he seemed completely frustrated. He used to play CHS so he didn´t like the more supply, the map, the troops I have, the planes I have... he didn´t like the high accuracy of my torpedoe bombers ([8|] seriously???), he didn´t like the A2A. In short he thought the mod would be different. After one and a half month he realized he didn´t like the house rules either, as well as he didn´t like PDU on. The reason for all this was IMO the loss of his cruisers where he thought this would be different in CHS (wonder what CHS looks like if cruisers can be sent against the KB) and he lost 40 aircraft of various types at Noumea as they launched in piece meal strikes against the KB. Again this should look different he thought. [8|] After long discussion back and forth I told him that he should just do what he wants to do, so he can now upgrade ALL his bombers to 4Es, launch a massive all out offensive in China,..... All I did so far was called Lunacy by him and the game seemed to be seriously before an end. After pages of discussions I was just sick of discussing and let him now do what he wants to do.

The result with the bombardment TF lead to a completely different mood now on his side! [X(][&o]

I think the hardest part of playing PBEM is finding an opponent who wants to play the game to have FUN, to LEARN, and to play to the END (even if you lose all your CV's within the first 6 months [:(][:(]).
That's why I respect players like Andy Mac who have lost all of India and is still playing. [&o][&o]

Absolutely agreeing here! Though Andy wasn´t the one who lost India, wasn´t that Wobbly and Andy just overtook the Allied side then? [:)]

Not to being misunderstood (always a risk if you´re not a native speaker) I really appreciate Helpless. He was very reliable so far (just look at the many turns we do each day [&o]) but it´s hard if you recognize that your opponent is already completely frustrated because of the things I mentioned before. And I don´t want to have the game going for 1 year to end it then because of different oppinions on what should happen and how should it look like. So I would have preferred to end it now than in one year. We will go on (the long run hopefully - if I don´t drop out because I can´t do anything against the 150 4Es a month coming in from mid 42 on [:D]). Though with for the Allied side "not so restricting" house rules... [8|]

unbelievable, the Nagato made it to Battavia. I´m sure she (or is it "it" in English) will sink nevertheless: Now at 95 floatation damage.

What percentage of your bombers are set on Naval Attack do you also have on Naval Search?? I have found that 20 or 30% is best to ensure that the ships are found and attacked. It might be the level of detection the TFs have that are causing the low level of LBA attacking them. [&:] I think the amount of LBA that attack a target is hard coded to the detection levels.
This is just a shot in the dark. [:D]

BigB,
Can you address this issue or is something that you did not modify in your mod??

I did lower experience across the board, BUT, they (the Japanese) all over 65 experience at start (that is the lowest end of the scale, most will have over 70). I haven't seen that yet as a problem getting them to fly missions - I have seen plenty of 100 bomber raids.

Other than that, there is nothing I touched that could have affected that...I don't believe their experience is to low to affect them flying a mission (bombers don't need 80 experience to take off and attack ships).

All bombers are set on nav search 10%. Means close to 20 bombers are searching. One datai of Dinah IIs also (27 planes). And those two TFs are in range of all three Mavis groups in the area too. So I would suppose the detection level to be quite high! [:D]

Here is what was in the op report regarding these two TFs:

Ki-21 Sally has spotted Joan Moller at 24,66
Ki-21 Sally sighting report: 3 Allied ships at 24,66 , Speed 27 , Moving Northeast
Ki-21 Sally has spotted Burnie at 22,65
Ki-21 Sally has spotted Jan van Amstel at 22,65
Jan van Amstel is reported HIT
Ki-21 Sally has spotted Burnie at 22,65
Burnie is reported HIT
H8K Emily has spotted Pieter de Bitter at 22,65
H8K Emily has spotted Forafric at 24,66
G4M1 Betty sighting report: 1 Allied ship at 22,65 , Speed 4 , Moving Southwest
G4M1 Betty has spotted Jan van Amstel at 22,65
G4M1 Betty has spotted Burnie at 22,65
G3M Nell has spotted Forafric at 24,66

two ships were even hit by my search planes...

Those bombers (at least the Army bombers) are well over 80 exp. The best is exp 87!!!! Veterans from the Philipines that I switched out with lower exp groups. The IJN torp bombers are all well above 70 exp. Can´t think about exp being a problem. I thought first about morale but that isn´t it either. Only solution: a die roll! [:D]

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 12000 feet

20 February saw the biggest 4E raid so far, coming out of Darwin. Low hit rate because of no recon me thinks, I´m glad he doesn´t recon Kendari with the F4s he has available. The combat replay showed 3 Oscars downed A2A while only one B17 was brought down immediately A2A by a Zero. Doesn´t really matter if I use Oscars or Zeroes because both only damage them mostly. Perhaps 20 were damaged, flak was intense (2 special BF and a big BF at Kendari) this time (the alt didn´t favour him [:D] and the real guns were shooting) killed 2 B17 and damaged over 20. More A2A kills as some bombers crashed on the way back.

this is the base with the best AA defense in this region. I think it has the best AA defense of all places except the Home Islands. The 6000 feet were perfectly used again and the Japanese AA guns were used to hang up the laundry because of not being able to shoot at the Hudsons while the Hudson crews were laughing!

I can´t go down further as the far more (in numbers and efficiency) small caliber AA weapons of the Allied would take down bomber after bomber... Allied flak was pretty good modeled I think! (no joke)

You know she'll be hit by a sub on the way to Singapore with two torpedoes and sunk.

[:D] even if she won´t make it was already a wonder. The ship was three hexes out with a floatation dam of 94 and 95 and made port!

While the two AA battailons take damage every turn, they don´t do much (only taking damage... [8|]) The base is completely closed but I brought some nav construction battailons, when they get the base in better shape I will try an ambush (even if this will only lead to a 1:1 kill rate fighters vs bombers)

At Bataan there are only the two CD gun units left. The Imperial Guards division will take the base next turn!

BB Nagato is down to 38/54 and it seems she should really make it! Again, unbelievable![X(]

Two turns ago I said that the low hit rate of the B17 over Kendari was probably because he didn´t do any recon before and I´m glad the F4s don´t do any recon there. Look at this from the actual turn:

F-4 Lightning takes recon photos of Kendari

I fear that I will soon have to abandon everything in B17 range out of Kendari. I never went after North Australia but like Helpless is using it I may think about an invasion with 8 or 9 divisions in this game. All bases in the North show the aircraft symbol and the bases are expanding fast, so there must be a lot of troops!

the way Helpless´ bombers acted from the start on would be a real dream later on for me when the bombers will go after the easy targets instead of killing themself against a CV cap. this is a surface combat TF consisting of a couple CA and CL with DD escorts to attack Soerabaja´s TFs next turn. Pity it was spotted. The TFs next to Timor were the third time in a row not attacked by 100+ bombers and are safe soon.

the biggest difference in air vs naval targets is that Helpless has gotten his planes in the air since the start while I´m happy if I´m having a strike now and then.

4Es are perfect for that role, real losses were 1 Zero and 1 Oscar A2A lost against the B17 while no B17 was lost.

Sorry, but laughing my butt off here - Edwards R. of the AVG (whom I am pretty sure is a non-entity game creation) is a born killer and one lucky dude!
I say this because in one of my PBEMs - this same guy shot right past every Historical- testosterone laden 'real' pilot in the AVG (all the historical pilots who start over 80 exp), and quickly became the Allies leading Ace!

Must be some magic with this guy![X(][&o]

Ok, back to your war....

(Castor - still taking notes as you play [;)])
