Guns lost 40

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 9
Runway hits 81

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Wellington III bombing at 6000 feet

the same heavy flak fire damages 7 out of 100+ bombers of the next attack... wonder what I should laugh more about, the ridicoulos damage 15+ units with AA weapons are doing to 100 Allied bombers, or the casualties they suffer??? [8|] One Allied bomber out of this attack was lost today... [>:] range 7

Day Air attack on TF, near Rangoon at 29,34

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 126
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 24
A6M3 Zero x 24

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IV x 3
Liberator III x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 12 damaged
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim IV: 3 destroyed
Liberator III: 5 destroyed

don´t know what this should be? Probably a wrong range setting as I don´t think Helpless wants to have such strikes at TFs docked at Rangoon. Even if we can´t really fight 100 4Es at the same time, when there are only a dozen bombers attacking then 150 Zeroes are able to take them all down (one turned back).

I ordered my 300 bombers on ground attack but not a single attacked. So we try to shred our divisions with a shock attack in this wooden hex... my assault value gets halfed and the Chinese assault value gets doubled. As said before, the best tactic in the Sian-Homan-area is NOT to attack. Just sit and wait and let the attacker bleed himself!

Hi Castor, first time posting on your AAR.  I was looking for threads with folks playing Big B as I am playing one now versus Aztez and am working on starting another one.  I like the feel of A2A - #of hits seems right, there are leaker that get through even strong CAP to launch torps or bombs.  However, the 4E bombers are quite annoying.  I have been doing a little testing with a setup I made with B17s in the PI, all other aircraft stood down and some interceptor groups I added in Formosa.

I read earlier your theory about maybe the Tojo/Tony having better success due to higher penetration weapons so I am trying to find out if that is true.

No matter how many I damage, they all seem to come back the next day.  I even tried for a couple of days landing some of KB's crack zeros at a targeted base (balikapan) and all they did was damage planes and get shot down for their troubles.  The only defense I can find is a risky offense - trying to bring to bear enough planes to hit all the bases they can sortie from (my problem is in Java) and bombardment runs (not without its cost).

Have you found any solution to these monsters?  I am afraid that no fighter will really work - even the late war Japanese fighters are not much better armed - maybe only some of the four cannon armed fighters will work - but that's a long way off.

I think the difference may be in armor ratings in Big B versus Stock.  I think if the armor goes down, perhaps the shoot down's increase by a little bit and then maybe the morale really drops and the unit doesn't fly as often.

I also am testing a modification to heavy bomber loadout - I am wondering if changing the weapon loadout to a "stick" of bombs (modelled as one weapon device representing a lot of bombs) with somewhat higher effect, but much higher accuracy but maybe 6-8 bombs per stick helps in attacks by the bombers.

Hi Donnie,

nice to have you aboard!

I feel your pain about the 4Es, I´m experiencing the same! Though my opponent has already a couple of times the numbers of heavy bombers that you are facing in your game as he is already receiving around 150 of them every month! [:D]

I started producing the Tony and Tojo a week ago and already upgraded one sentai each, though they are repairing awfully slowly (Tojo 7 planes a day, Tony only 4 a day - perhaps because it has 3 points more durability, I don´t know). So it will take some time until I can use a good number of those fighters against the incoming air pirates.

I´m hoping for better results as those fighters have armor (which means hopefully less get shot down A2A) and they have a gun value of 12 and it´s 12 also against the 2 armored bombers. The Zero has also a gun value of 12 but against the bombers only a value of 8 as it´s 7,7 mm MGs can´t penetrate the bombers´ armor. I will definetely do better with the Tony/Tojo as the Oscars are completely useless against everything that is not a Chinese biplane fighter. I´m expecting at LEAST two or three times more 4Es shot down when employing only Tojo/Tony instead of Zero/Oscar. Not to forget the higher climb rates of my new fighters so, theoreatically, more should be in the air to intercept the bombers.

We will soon see how they will perform...

TF 1051 encounters mine field at Canton Island (98,99)

Allied Ships
DD Drayton, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

sub laid mines at Canton! Laid them three turns ago with two of my mine layer subs. One is always in port for repairs while two are doing their missions. So far those subs are the most succesful... Canton is already a port 5 so I doubt the Drayton will sink as it did not immediately go down...

My troops from Myitkina are entering Mandalay so this means there are now for sure around 20 units with lots of AA guns. They manage to damage 4 bombers of which none is lost. They take a lot of casualties in return again... All the 105 and 75mm flak guns are not firing as the bombers come in too low... Good thing is that even after 111 runway hits the airfield is already completely repaired again as I´m having 750 engineers there already. Will be hard to close the base now and soon I will have some IJA fighters there...[:D]

the daitais I moved to Taung Gyi of course attracted an Allied bomber strike! The results favoured us this time though. Two reasons why we had the upper hand this time regarding losses. First: most of our fighters scrambled and therefore there weren´t dozens destroyed on the ground. 42 out of 54 A6M3 and 24 out of 27 A6M2 engaged today. All with cap 90%. Means all 90% of the A6M2 scrambled!!! [&o] Now I have just to figure out how this was possible as I´m only getting 50-60% of the planes to scramble most of the time! Second: there were a lot of Blenheims and a dozen of IL4c which both suffered. Would have looked totally different if those 2E bombers would have stayed home. In fact I don´t see a reason why my opponent includes those bombers in his attacks if he would achieve far better results with 4E only attacks.

We achieved a 3:1 in planes lost today! Taung Gyi is stripped of planes again as a follow up strike would be fatal. Around 35 planes sitting damaged at the airfield. Hoping for no follow up strike.

would call those ground losses "minor". Not to compare with the 500-1000 casualties caused by the Allied airfield strikes.

Helpless has discovered the PERFECT ALLIED BOMBING ALTITUDE of 6000 ft. While he varied his altitude in the past, we are now facing 6000 ft. bombing runs only. There is only one smiley that I can use for my further comments: . This is not just some rant, it really seems the designers (as well as the beta testers) must have been completely drunk (or nuts?) while designing and testing...

18 out of nearly 200 bombers damaged... 2200+ ground losses no matter if those are mostly disablements, those units get completely wrecked in two turns...

If there is really someone of the responsibles thinking that this is realistic (while the number of AA units isn´t realistic either) then I only can say: I´m sorry for you! Hope you will feel better again someday... [8|]
Today, I lost 4 Sallies to ops (range 3, against a undefended target). The Allied lost 2 bombers to flak today against this base (range 7):

Image

another for the one who designed the Japanese flak routine...
A single US base force can put up more flak fire than half of the Japanese flak units of the whole map... another

note that not all of the base forces are displayed in the screenshot as there are too many of them... [8|]

place the same amount of US units at a base and send in 100 Sallies and 90 won´t return... [8|]

those attacks against the best defended base in the whole world (when we talk about the number of flak guns) can be flown every day at a range of 7 with every day the same number of planes from the same squadrons because the bombers don´t even get damaged and the few damaged are repaired the next day. Allied bombers are also not suffering any op losses that could make an Allied commander think about not to attack the world´s biggest flak base. [8|] IMO a pretty bad joke... don´t need to post another screeny of the AA units... "Good" that there are enough "wrongs" on the Japanese side also that favour the Japanese (unlimited Betty torps comes to mind), so noone could think about such things being "strange" during the programming... [;)]

As a side note, perhaps it´s good that those AA units are doing nothing as they are mostly equipped with 105mm guns which they didn´t have in real life anyway... just another boo boo dream of someone...

14 of the 15 destroyed Oscars were downed during the inevitable bounce phase... so the Chinese fighters once again did 14 times better with the bounce than without it... when the bounce was over (all 14 Oscars were from the 64 fighter sentai btw, so only this sentai was bounced...) the IJA and IJN fighters cleared the skies achieving a kill rate of 35:1 or better...[8D]

the bombers went up 2000 ft again... there´s nothing left at Mandalay that can shoot, so it doesn´t matter anymore what altitude the bombers are coming in. Have a look, this is how my AA and base forces look like after a couple of attacks... A hundred threads about IJN BB nuke bombardments, but what about those air raids? They inflict easily the same amount of ground losses - to be more precise they are killing the units that should kill the bombers... very accurate...

56th Brigade Wiped Out at Norfolk Island by attrition!!! [X(][X(][X(]

during the combat replay the ground combat at Norfolk showed a 56th Brigade and a 56/1 Brigade! Why the hell are there two parts of the ground unit? I unloaded them from ONE TF all at the same time, so what does this crazy game do when it creates suddenly TWO parts of the only unit I unload!

The result is that the 56 th Brigade (parent unit) was only a tiny fragment while the 56/1 Brigade had 99% of the troops in it that were unloaded. The parent unit gets wiped out by attrition and now as I check the LCU it says 56/1 Brigade.... [:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@] This means the damn game again goes crazy and I lost a brigade now as the fragment didn´t change into the parent unit and now the fragment won´t rebuild...

VERY GOOD WORKING PRODUCT ONCE AGAIN!!! [&o]

My opponent is spotting my barges all the time and this turn they should arrive at Koepang, though I have kept them one hex outside the base and the BBs missed them. Only nuking the nearly empty base. Those TFs are never ever spotted, for a reason I don´t know...[&:]

BB Mississippi is part of this slow TF that should end up 4 hexes from Koepang - means in range of my Betties at Kendari. Doesn´t help me as I have yet to spot one of those big bombardment TFs since the beginning of the game... and we´re already in July...

Am building up Maumere now, from there my Betties can cover the area South of Timor to Northern Australia. Better say could cover, as so far I wasn´t lucky with Betty attacks against high value targets in range.

moved 81 Zeroes to Taung Gyi two hexes from Mandalay and those 15 Zeroes are leaking Cap. I lose 3 Zeroes A2A today, the Allied lose 6 bombers. A kill ratio that I can´t sustain long. Nearly 100 hits every day on the airfield is just too much to be repaired. Got 700+ engineers at Mandalay but the airfield stays around 30% damage while the service damage of course always stays at 100%. Can´t get this airfield working again if those bombers never stop flying against this base at a range of 7... unbelievable...

78 undamaged Zeroes were at this airfield, with a cap setting of 90%. I get 35 of them in the air, which is exactly 50% of the planes on CAP... [8|] Really funny to read the thread "are Japanese players smarter"... wonder if I´m playing another game than what is described in this thread. Perhaps I´m just dumb and I´m doing something wrong when I lose 4 times more fighters than the Allied lost bombers this turn because 30 fighters get torched on the ground.

When playing Allied I really like my AWACS that are around at the whole map. They enable me to have always ALL fighters in the air that are set on Cap. At Rangoon I now have 300 fighters (which is completely ridicoulos!!!!) and all of them are set on 90% Cap and around 100 are in the air... So one bomber strike would probably destroy 200 fighters. UNESCORTED bomber strike I have to add. Not because the mod doesn´t work, it´s because the whole air combat routine is cr*p. I know that it´s not realistic to have 100% of the fighters in the air (like the Allied have 90% of the time), but to have always 50% of the planes at an airfield destroyed for sure because only half of the Cap scrambles is at least "strange"...

for what reason ever the Allied assault value suddenly goes up 10+ points again each turn. This turn 13 guns were "repaired". What is happening here? [X(] I don´t know for how many weeks Homan is completely cut off and how many HUNDRED supply hits my bombers have achieved but the Allied suddenly seem to have no supply shortage at all. Flak was suddenly strong this turn compared to the last three dozen attacks, so there magically must have popped up supplies en masse. No supplies are flown in as my LRCAP doesn´t intercept anything. There is no way that there can suddenly be supply. May be paranoia but I sometimes really wonder if save games can be manipulated... I know they can, though I don´t know if everything is possible...[8|]

His radar is what makes the difference in CAP. When it comes to your losses against bombers, that's what happens when your fighters are made out of tissue paper...

Steady on, Old Chap! I know Pavel and I do not think he would cheat. Ask him about the supply situation. If he has not got a magic method that he would not want you to know, he may be able to help you work out what happened.

it´s not the problem that my fighters are shot down. The kill ratio of bombers vs fighters works VERY WELL in Brians mod. Not like stock when 50 Zeroes take down 100 B25. 80-90% of the fighters get torched on the ground every time...

In 1.4 Brian has revised the A2A model again, so it will be interesting to see how that plays.

Playing the same mod as both sides. I understand your pain with regards the B17s being almost immune to Zero's, but the results are pretty much what you would expect in real life.

The Luftwaffe often intercepted unescorted raids with heavily armed/armoured (and much faster) FW190s and achieved something like a 3:1 kill ratio. Imagine if they had used Zeros.....I doubt they would have got better than 1:1 that we see in your (and my) games.
