In the past weeks I've been reading here and there minor and major criticisms to the game.

I'm somehow fed up (in a midl way [:)]) with this.

One thing is to give an opinion/suggestion to improve, that's constructive. But to say things like 'the game is screwed up' or 'I'm soon going to give it up' and the like doesn't make sense. I mean, it does, but not in this forum. [:-]

You don't like it, buy something else and leave us alone, please!

I'm here to exchange comments, learn new things (on the game and history) and give my 2 cents to try to improve (if possible) the game.

Just to further clarify somehow my position:

I've been playing wargames (board and PC) for the past 24 years. I've been writing reviews when I was studying and I've started again one year ago (thanks to WitP). I think I played and purchased at least 80% of the wargames on the market.
Hence I feel I can rightly say that (as most forum dwellers here [;)]) that I'm an expert not just an amateur.
Some of those above mentioned games (few) I enjoyed A LOT.
No one, and I mean NO ONE like WitP, ever. I haven't purchased a new game in months, and I have to force myself to play the review codes I receive FOR FREE. That has to count for something!!!

I know WitP is not perfect, but definitely one of the best so far (best for me).

Please be smart! You want Matrix to work on WitP? Give them reasons to. To criticize heavily is a good reason to stop supporting not to continue.
I'm in the software business, in sales and marketing more precisely. If we want WitP not to die (development wise) we have to give Matrix some good reasons. Saying that the game sucks is not listed among the good reasons.

So once again: be smart or leave us alone. Plese, please, please [&o]

mc3744. The problem is that in a lot of ways this is exactly the game we were hoping for from the first advertisments. But in a number of significantly annoying ways it fails.
Which generates a lot more response than if it were an utter failure. It's close, but it falls on it's face towards the finish line. Tremendously frustraiting. Which is why so many people are working on "improvements" and "corrected scenarios" and the like. You're asking that the very people the game was designed to attract either shut up and give up, or play a flawed product. Probably not going to happen.

give up, or play a flawed product

Or what ?

Grigsby and Billings will read all the endless diatribes and be cowed into a major overhaul of the game at this point ?

The forum has in the last month or two has become somewhat negative. The same gripes over and over and over. Has gotten a bit old.

Yeah, it's like that scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where the knights attack a castle with swords, and get bombarded with garbage, poultry and other livestock: painful and ultimately futile. [:D]

Public code will not change the nature of the fact.

The game engine was stretched a long long ways from the start. It has reached the limit of stretching. Each fix is just as likely to break something else at this point.

Starting from scratch with a good design document would be very helpful, but further mods on existing code is really not going to make much in the way of progress. It is not a question of programmer skill, it is a function of the engine design.

Yes - there is a huge problem with the code. However - there are other parts of the game that would be useful - esp. the database, info in the map (as a basis for upgrading might be very valuable), and probably some subroutines that would be useful.

EDIT: Personally, i would like to see a consortium of players develop a WITP2, but i don't want to run afoul of Matrix and 2x3 in legal matters. If the code was public, this might obviate the problem.

Frag,

I saw the malaria code that you released the other day. Any chance that you would consider releasing snippets like this to help answer some of the questions that come up?

Not looking to have people rewrite the code, just hoping that when you release a bit, it will help us sort through some of the more puzzling aspects of the game.

As a war game I love WIP. I have been waiting for this game since I wasted all that time playing WiP on the commodore 64.
However, I am disappointed with a few things. The worst thing about the game is that the interface is way below par. As far as what is were and things like that it is fine, but for someone like me who has not played a war game in a long time, what is what and what it is for would be nice. I think it would have been great if lists of ship, planes and other units would have been listed like they are with a little more information, like: bb (Battle Ship), Some Air Group (P-39 Fighters), and on like that for everything. A little plain language would of really helped leveling out the steep learning curve. It would also help them sell games to people besides hardcore war-gamers.
An interface should be a simple thing to learn and should provide as much feed back as possible, it should also be very redundant offering a lot of different ways to get to something, WiP is a little redundant, but it could be much better.
The manual, I am not saying it is bad, I am wondering why it is a PDF file? Everything that is in that manual should be in a standard windows help file. It should also be accessible from within a context sensitive menu from the game. There is just so much more they could have put in this interface that would get us into the game instead of spending so much time learning to play the game.
Screen resolution is horrible. With so many flat LCD screens around, the game should fit into native resolutions.
To tell you the truth I feel like I am loading a game that was written 15 years ago for DOS. Could be so much better!

just for the record .... ow lines of code does witp have. I work in the aerospace industry and this is a typical metric. [:D]
