Long story short.

The sub is electric and only uses the diesel to recharge the batteries.
If it is sailing faster than the diesel can recharge, the battery will drain.

My reading seems to show a very uneven upgrade process on these WW II leftovers. Even within the same class not all of the subs received the same upgrades. From everything I looked up the Balao should be able to go 20 kts on the surface. I've already reported that problem.

The best way to handle that IMO is to send a message to all players that someone has proposed to go to X speed. If the other players agree than the game speeds up / slows down until a critical event of some kind (new detection, etc...) sends it back to 1x speed.

The only thing that would worry Ireland is a threat to attack the Guinness Brewery, otherwise they have little to worry about. Love it there. I'm going back some day. :D

New Surface Contact and New Underwater Contact are the only two I have set to push it to 1x. So, your question made me do another test and I found a clue(s).

If I turn off every single flag to go to 1x in the message log options it continues to run at full speed until a pop-up about a new radar ...

Ah, but those stats seem to refer to the Balaos as they served in WW2, are you sure you're not looking at a DB entry for a Post-War GUPPY conversion Balao class?

Those configs would have made them somewhat faster underwater, with the removal of guns and smoothing out of exterior surfaces.

The sources I've seen on the internet all seem to say the top speed of the Balao on the surface was 20+ kts. In game it's 18 kts, plus it burns batteries at top speed on the surface or snorkeling which I don't believe is correct. Also, the published cruising speed is 10kts, but in game it is 8kts ...

I've been playing the "The Enemy Below" scenario in the Silent Service DLC and it seems that no matter how close or far you are from your target straight running torpedoes (MK 14) always have a PH of 40%. This seems wrong to me. Shouldn't this change with the distance from the target and the angle ...

The trick is to hide behind the little islands and spitz and use individual "spotters" to find the Soviets. You then fire your missiles from radar "shaded" positions.
