Something similar happened to me against the AI.

1945 scenario, Allied sub set out to mine Truk - hit two IJN mines in the entrance to the port, split open and sank.

Ordered 2 July.

Chased up by Matrix Support (to whom many, many thanks [&o]) 25 July.

Received here in the UK 28 July.

Packet appeared to have been posted in France.

Your suggestion about reducing the level of hardware acceleration, combined with keeping the music turned down to zero, seems to have worked for me, so far.
