Tweeking the AI

<t>Mr. Frag - That's fascinating to learn that the AI had to be tweeked for different scenarios. There's an easy to read book, "How computers play chess", which by analogy gives much insight into how they play wargames as well (or how they are programmed to play). <br/>

Effects of Leaders

<t>Has anybody found an effect that leaders have on the game? I've not downloaded the lastest patch, but in previous versions, I tried replaying surface-to-surface battles with various leaders and found Zero effect (shell hits were exactly the same!). <br/>

Hence, I'm not sure that changing ...

Bonus

1. If the German is given "Help" (or is it "Max help"?) that advantage should continue the entire game as long as you pick this option everytime you load the previous game.

2. I'm not sure about russian artillery.

Interesting Idea

<t>Tom, What you said about adding tank corp to Russian HQs makes a lot of sense (particularly early in the war). <br/>
<br/>
Your post made me also realize that having divisions in reserve (i.e., in an HQ) is probably of greater value to the defender than to the attacker. That is, if the AI sends a ...

HQ Reserve

<t>I've found it best to deploy all my divisions out of HQs as opposed to leaving them in an HQ. While leaving them in an HQ allows the AI to reinforce friendly units that are being attacked or attacking, I find this causes more problems than it helps. (if others think otherwise, I'd be interested ...

Supply is Zero on edited Scenario

<t>If you use the external scenario editor on certain parameters, I've noticed that supply for all of the German or all of the Russian forces goes to zero. For example, changing scenario start date can do this. Sometimes trying to add a unit back into the force causes this to happen (i.e., if you ...

AI & Unpredictability

<t>The AI does unpredictable things at times - and not always the smartest thing - but it is reflective of how the war was actually conducted. Military leaders often do, what in retrospect looks stupid. The software could be hard coded to force the AI to only take limited actions and be much more ...

No problems

<t>I haven't seen unusual shatters. The AI does know when a player's units have an HQ with zero OPs and will attack and shatter the unit (this has always been true in the various versions of WIR). I think this is an OK cheat by the AI since it is very bad practice to completely deplete OPs in an HQ ...

Capturing cities

<t>WIR is a great game, but it is weak in replicating the difficulties the Germans had in capturing fortified cities such as Lenigrad, Moscow, and Stalingrad. Another possible solution would be to reduce the attack capability of tanks attacking cities - this would be historically accurate as well ...

Japan was going to fall?

<t>An excellent book that looks at this issue is called "The Fall of Japan" - it gives both the US and Japanese sides to the issue. While many Americans look back at what we know now and assume Japan was about to collapse - this simply wasn't the case. Even after the 2-A bombs were dropped, and when ...

Moscow & Lennigrad

<t>One of the biggest failings of the AI is that it seems to view all hexes as having equivalent value, when it should see the value of Moscow & Lennigrad as crucial. Because of this, often the Russian AI mans the defenses of Moscow with just a few troops and the German AI fails to concentrate its ...

Value of keeping HQs

<t>Maybe it was posted, but I didn't see it: The key value of the various "dummy" HQs (i.e., ones that you don't use to command troops -e.g., Italian, Rumanian HQs, etc.) is to provide special supply to troops. <br/>

Move your HQs as forward as possible, even if they are empty. Select any unit ...

SC use by US

<t>As noted, US DDs are much better sub killers than SCs. However, when playing against the AI, many jap subs appear near Nomeau and early in the game, DDs are too valuable to keep back just to attack subs. <br/>

Also, the loss of a DD is much more costly in victory point terms than lossing a ...

US Reputation

<r>To further rcwkent's point, the idea that the US would easily give up is an idea that much of the world has always believed - to the present day. In 1998, the "aggressive & warlike" Osama bin laden spoke of a black day for the US that would cause it to fragment into separate states: <br/>

Air Replacement & 19

<t>Tanjman - Thanks for your input, I had suspected the hard-wiring you mentioned. Scen 19 is one of the most interesting for the US human player and it's too bad we can't just edit the scenario. The damaged plane idea is a nice quick fix. <br/>
