You have to put capital ships into manual command mode first because there's no way to get the to do rolls with the helm active.

Well, I have to figure out all these newfangled bump and specular maps and whatnot. Some things seem to be futzed by the new patch and Magic doesn't seem to want to cooperate with fixing them, or I'm just being unusually dense.

There aren't any battleships in the game for the same reason there aren't any battleships around today. It's a boatload (battleshipload?) of resources for a single platform that isn't capable of doing anything that another, less expensive platform can't also do.
