RE: Nagumo has too many Zeros?

<t> Arguably, removing the 6th Kokutai from play could also be ahistorical, since those Zeros were available for duty. That more were not launched had probably more to do with IJN doctrine and the generally fouled up condition of the IJN organization and intelligence in the hour or two prior to ...

RE: Nagumo has too many Zeros?

Actually, if you read Shattered Sword and look at the Fighter Operations timline in the back, at least 3 of the 6th Kokutai Zeros were launched from Akagi.

RE: (Some) Zeros Search Qualified in Santa Cruz Scn

<t> Towards the end of the Solomons campaign, the IJN were starting to use mixed Zero/Val groups for armed recon/search missions, and (though I can't remember the exact reference at the moment) I am pretty sure I recall land-based Zeros being sent on search missions in the Solomons in 1942. I ...

Did not G4Ms torpedo the USN destroyer Jarvis off Guadalcanal?

I also know some IJN DDs were hit by TBMs in the last 12-18 months of the war.

Short Midway AAR

<t> So on my second time through the Battle of Midway (after losing all three carrier in exchange for only 2 IJN flattops), I finally felt I knew what I was doing. Mimicing Fletcher and Spruance, I decided to keep my flattops NE of Midway and out of range of any IJN strikes until the Japanese had ...

RE: Dual role of the Dauntless

<t> For example, if you were to play Midway "historically" as the USN, you would turn off all the search sectors for the Enterprise/Hornet group, and leave on only the Northeasterlt sectors for Yorktown to prevent an ambush, letting PBY's do most of the spotting. By 1942, the terms "Scouting ...

RE: B17@Midway

There should be a mix of B-17Ds and B-17Es (mostly Es) at Midway. But that is not the only error. The Wake Island Scenario has G4Ms, when in reality they should be G3Ms.

RE: Can yout TF or TG shoot down enemy search planes

Well, hopefully CAP has at least a small chance of preventing a sighting report. There were a few cases where US fighters downed IJN search planes before the latter relayed any (useful) information.

Something else that maybe needs correction for the Wake Island Scenarios:

The IJN bombers used to bomb Wake were (with one possible exception) G3Ms, not G4Ms.

RE: How many aircraft could the Shinano hold?

<t> In actual wartime combat operations, the most any IJN heavy flattop ever carried was 81 (Kaga for the Pearl Harbor Operation), and standard loads were 54-63 aircraft. I do not believe the Shokaku class ever carried more than 70, while the Hiryu/Soryu airgroups never exceeded 63 (again at Pearl ...
